With the approaching launch of the latest expansion, CD Projekt RED has revealed its dedication to redeem Cyberpunk 2077. The game, despite being worked on and fixed after release, is still far from the quality bar that fans of the studio expected.

Phantom Liberty, which released this September, will feature Idris Elba in a major role with a story that will call the player to take important decisions that will shape the future of the city. The expansion will also overhaul several in-game systems, such as the police, class abilities, customisation, vehicles and more.

Gabe Amatangelo is replacing former Phantom Liberty's lead developer, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz. The industry and veteran has already worked as the lead developer on the the first major patch for Cyberpunk 2077 (1.5), released in February 2022 which was quite well received by fans of the game.

Along with the new features of the game, Amatangelo has been working to solve some of the company’s issues, such as some veteran developers not wanting to work in Poland. To make recruitment easier, the company has recently opened an office in Boston as well.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Amatangelo recently mentioned that the team is working on Phantom Liberty "with absolute dedication to do what's needed to make it right" with full permission by CD Projekt’s board of directors.

The developer also mentioned that the original plans was to release two different major DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077. Later, these plans were modified and the two expansions were combined in the single Phantom Liberty expansion.

Fans have been reacting with excitement to the news, saying "If they make the open world feel more alive like they’re saying, it can go a long [...] way". Others seem to want to just have the problems fixed "I would really love to play the game that I keep hearing about online".

While we wonder if Phantom Liberty will actually finish the long tail of updates to Cyberpunk 2077, we also feel confident that Amatangelo's team will do the right thing.
