Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be a huge RPG when it comes out but all of that size has to go somewhere. PC players will need to have 150 GB of free space and an SSD just to run the game.

Fans on the game’s subreddit reminded the community that they will need to upgrade their PCs to play the RPG. In addition to needing at least 150 GB of free space, those who still have an HDD will need an SSD. Even those that want to play with minimum requirements will need to upgrade.

While needing an upgrade can be seen as disappointing, it makes sense given the ambitions of Larian Studios. You don’t see a lot of games that boast having 170+ hours of cutscenes, most of which are choice-driven.

The Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t need an SSD but that’s because it was a beta. Obviously, things have changed a lot since then, as the final product will have numerous improvements. It’s fair to say that the beta didn’t have 17,000 endings or an extensive character creator.

While the game will work on a HDD, or a hybrid drive, those who use the aging storage technology may suffer from issues. Using a hard drive may not only result in long loading screens, but also stuttering and pop-in issues.

It’s not just PC players who will struggle just to play this game on their system. Xbox Series S owners have to wait longer for a proper port since Larian Studios is struggling to make the game playable on this system. The Xbox Series S is a decently powerful console, so the fact Larian is struggling with it shows how demanding this game is.

Unfortunately, games with large storage sizes is quickly becoming the norm for AAA games. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was also around 150 GB and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming in two discs, possibly making it 200 GB.
