Despite the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, Swen Vincke confirmed that Larian Studios won't be working on DLC for it or a sequel in the form of Baldur's Gate 4.
During the Larian Studios panel at the Games Developers Conference (GDC), Vincke confirmed that the studio plans to abandon the Dungeons and Dragons style of games and focus on a new genre and IP.
Larian Studios took over Baldur's Gate for the third entry, with veteran studio BioWare tackling the first two entries released in 1998 and 2000, respectively.
Larian was mainly known, before the resounding success of BG3, for the Divinity series, developing seven games in the franchise, with Divinity: Original Sin II garnering incredible critical success in 2017, convincing Baldur's Gate IP owners Wizards of the Coast that they were the right studio to revive the franchise.
Back in February, it was reported that Hasbro, owners of Wizards of the Coast, amassed over $90 million in revenue from the success of Baldur's Gate 3, with its gaming division possibly helping the company stabilise during a rough patch after reporting an overall 15% revenue decline.
Baldur's Gate 3 received an epilogue DLC in December; beyond that, it's all but clear that fans shouldn't expect a major expansion from Larian Studios.
It is unclear who will be responsible for creating Baldur's Gate 4 if it becomes a reality. BioWare's reputation in the gaming industry has taken a hit in recent years due to the failure of games such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. Additionally, the studio is already occupied with developing new installments for both Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Maybe Larian Studios will take some time to develop a new universe before their glorious return to the Forgotten Realms. Only time will tell.
