Avengers: Secret Wars may be directed by Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler

Directing an Avengers movie is a rare opportunity, with only two directors touching the films in the past. With The Russo Brothers not coming back — and Joss Whedon definitely not — new eyes are needed for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Currently, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is confirmed to be directing The Kang Dynasty. However, Avengers: Secret Wars is still unconfirmed.

Who is directing Avengers: Secret Wars?

According to comic book movie news podcast The Weekly Planet, Secret Wars’ director is a big Marvel name. The podcast — known quite well for revealing secret Marvel information — claims that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will take the reins.

The podcast‘s host, James Clement, explained that the decision isn’t final. However, not only does Marvel want the director to helm the final Avengers film, but it’s a decision that makes sense.

“And Ryan Coogler, here’s another scoop, Mason, is at the very least one of the directors, is currently in talks for Secret Wars,” they said — transcribed via The Direct. “Which makes a lot of sense and yeah, the source here says, this is a reliable source, this person says ‘a fairly obvious choice.’ And it is. That makes sense.”

Not much more information was given on the scoop. However, judging from the director’s past of making massive successes, it does make sense. But will this change if Black Panther 2 isn’t a success? Honestly, we have no idea.

What comes after?

Avengers: Secret Wars is currently the final Avengers movie in Marvel‘s lineup. An adaptation of a gigantic multiverse storyline in the comic books, Secret Wars aims to ape Infinity War and Endgame’s massive success.

But what comes after that? With many believing that Endgame would be the final entry in the MCU, could Secret Wars actually be the final instalment? Judging from the rampant, unstoppable success of the MCU — absolutely not.

Secret Wars will lead into another era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Endgame did before it. One day, fans may get tired of so many releases, but with the wide variety the MCU offers, it could go on forever. Will you still be watching?
