Aquaman 2 title confirmed - releasing 2022

Aquaman 2 director James Wan announced the title of the upcoming Aquaman sequel earlier this week on Instagram, Titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the next entry in the DC series will release in cinemas December 16, 2022.

The next film in the series will follow the events of the first film, and will feature a number of returning characters. Jason Mamoa will reprise his role as Aquaman alongside Amber Herd who will play Mera.

A number of other stars will also star alongside the two protagonists, including Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Nicole, Kidman and Dolph Lundgren

The first film in the reboot series left plenty open to work with, including the post-credits scene which hinted at the return of Black Manta.

What’s the story?

The film is still early in development, so there aren't any confirmed story details for the film. However, director James Wan recently spoke with DC Fandome about the sequel.

“I’m excited to continue the journeys of our heroes, and antiheroes for that matter, and to continue to expand on the world with number two,” commented Wan.

Wan added that he wanted to: “try to do new things I didn’t get around to on the first film. Try something fresh. And the second one, I would say, is a little more serious, a little more relevant in the world we’re living in today.”

Building on success

Aquaman released in 2018, and grossed over £1.148 billio. In the film, Jason Mamoa stars as Aquaman and fights against his half-brother in a bid to lead the lost city of Atlantis.

The film started development in 2004, but it wasn’t until 2014 that real progress was made with the film. The success of Aquaman left many asking questions over a potential sequel, which is why it didn’t come as a surprise when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was announced last year.
