Another Age of Empires 2 expansion is on the way. Prematurely listed on the Microsoft Store, Age of Empires 2: The Mountain Royals will add new civilisations to the remade classic.

Spotted by users on the Age of Empires forum, the new AoE2 expansion was prematurely listed on the Microsoft Store for a number of hours. Not only that, but fans could even buy the expansion, although it wasn’t made accidentally playable.

Age of Empires 2: The Mountain Royals adds three campaigns and two civilisations. The new civilisations are the Georgians and the Armenians. On the campaign side, there are new stories for Georgians, Armenians and the Persians.

The Georgian story is called Tamar’s Ascension, following the first queen of Georgia aiming to escape imprisonment and rule her country.

Age of Empire 2’s new Armenian follows Prince Thoros attempting to liberate his homeland. However, the young prince has to contend with the deadly Byzantine forces as well as the Seljik Turks and the Franks.

Finally, the new Persian campaign follows an orphaned prodigy called Ismail as he leads the Safavid Order through the war-torn land.

Age of Empires 2: The Mountain Royals was listed at a price of $14.99, a standard price for Age of Empires expansion. With two new armies and three campaigns, alongside the Persian rework, the new expansion offers a lot of value for the price.

While the content does seem to be fairly strong, some Age of Empires fans are upset at the quantity included in the $15 expansion. With past AoE expansions offering massive overhauls, this is a step down from the content packs of old.

“I have a feeling that Microsoft is behind such lazy DLCs and not the devs themselves,” one fan said. “The devs don’t seem interested in making new architecture sets at all,” they concluded.

Age of Empires 2: The Mountain Royals does sadly seem to not include any unique architecture for any of its races. Instead, the new armies simply have new troops in old architecture, making everything blend together a bit too much. Nevertheless, if you wanted new troops to play with, this is for you.

There is currently no release date for the new Age of Empires DLC.
