If you’re in the market for a new gaming laptop, XMG has an intriguing proposition that could be a major contender for your dosh. The manufacturer has announced upgraded versions of its popular Core 15 and Core 17 models, both powered by the Intel-rivalling AMD Ryzen processor (much like the recently announced Eluktronics Matrix RP-15 and RP-17).

The new models continue to abide by the product line’s “undercover gaming” motto. This means that they combine powerful mobile gaming tech with a sleek, understated exterior design – one that purposefully steers away from the garish, bells-and-whistles approach of many other gaming laptops.

The choice between the two models essentially comes down to your preferred screen size – a 15.6-inch version for increased portability, or a 17.3-inch option for more immersive gaming. Either way, there’s the same level of customisable hardware under the hood.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new, AMD Ryzen-powered XMG Core laptops.

XMG Core 15 and Core 17 laptop specs

The new XMG Core 15 and Core 17 models come with the option of an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor or a more powerful AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor. Graphics-wise, there’s also a choice: the laptop can either be kitted out with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti card or a beefed-up RTX 2060 Refresh card – better for more demanding games with higher frame rates.

As with most gaming laptops, memory and storage are fully customisable. In terms of memory, there are two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots (allowing for up to 64 GB). Storage-wise, there are two M.2 2280 SSD slots available.

XMG Core 15 and Core 17 laptop features

One of the Core models’ unique selling points is their no-fuss, slimmed-down design, with what the manufacturer calls “deliberate understatement” making for a mature-looking portable gaming machine – one that could even double as a work computer. The 15.6-inch model has a height of just under 20mm and weighs less than 2kg; even the bigger, 17.3-inch model weighs in at only 2.5kg.

The screens on both versions promise full HD visuals and non-glare capability, with a screen-to-body ratio of 89 per cent. Both models also come with a high-def camera, stereo speakers and a noise-cancelling microphone, as well as a backlit RGB keyboard and a Microsoft precision touchpad. There’s also a huge variety of external connection ports for all your gaming peripherals.
