A rollicking cinematic adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones, featuring an impossibly dashing and charismatic hero… Naughty Dog’s Uncharted game series was always going to be a shoo-in for a big-screen adaptation.
This is set to be the first adaptation of a Naughty Dog IP, but a The Last of Us TV series is set to follow the release of the Uncharted film some time in the future.
However, much like Naughty Dog's recent releases, it appears the Uncharted movie has hit quite a few speedbumps throughout its production, suffering from multiple delays.

Uncharted movie release date
The on-again-off-again nature of its development over the years means that the Uncharted movie has had its fair share of release date changes – and that was before the disruption caused by Covid-19.
The current iteration of Uncharted has been shuffling around the release schedule ever since lockdown. It was originally due for a 5 March 2021 release, but was shunted back to October 2021 when the delayed Ghostbusters: Afterlife took its place. It then moved back up the schedule, taking the summer spot of 16 July 2021.
However, as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact cinema openings, Uncharted has been hit by another delay. With Cinderella pushed back until 16 July, Uncharted will now instead release on 11 February 2021, almost a year after its original release date.

More Uncharted news: Uncharted movie photos show Tom Holland in costume as Nathan Drake!
We've finally received a glimpse of Tom Holland in character as a young Nathan Drake, with fans still undecided as to whether they support the decision to cast the Spider-Man star over Nathan Fillion.
Aside from this, Nolan North also released images of him visiting the set, suggesting that the voice behind the in-game Nathan Drake could make some cameo appearance in the upcoming film.
This also comes after the release of further behind-the-scene images, shared by the Twitter account @THollandNews.
While these photos give very little away, it could hint that the film will include the black-tie auction sequence from Uncharted 4's Chapter 6. Aside from this detail, fans took issue with Mark Wahlberg's, who plays Sully, appearance.
Originally slated to play Nathan Drake, Wahlberg was instead cast as Sully. Uncharted fans were disappointed to see Wahlberg fails to capture Sully's appearance. "The fact that Mark Wahlberg as Sully doesn't have a freaking moustache is upsetting," stated one user.

Tom Holland says the film is "everything I dreamed it would be"
The good news is that cameras have finally started rolling on the Uncharted movie, and star Tom Holland is pretty chuffed with how things are going.
"Filming is going so well," the Spider-Man star said in the Instagram video embedded below.
Holland added: "The film is like, everything I dreamed it would be. I mean, I don’t know if you guys played the games, but I was such a huge fan of the game, and it’s been going so well."
It's nice to hear that things are going well, especially considering that this production been a long time coming.
In fact, a movie has been in the works ever since the late 2000s. It was originally greenlit by Sony Pictures on the strength of the series’ phenomenally successful first instalment, 2007’s Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and its acclaimed 2009 sequel Among Thieves.
Ever since then, though, the Uncharted movie has spent a decade in the dreaded Development Hell, with various scriptwriters, directors and stars coming and going over the years. Thankfully, the project is now moving ahead under the guidance of Venom and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. And, despite taking an enforced break during the coronavirus lockdown, filming on the much-anticipated adaptation is nearly complete.

Uncharted movie cast
As you likely already know, British star Tom Holland is taking a break from playing Spider-Man to take on the role of hero Nathan Drake. A wisecracking fortune hunter, "Nate" claims to be a descendant of celebrated English explorer Sir Francis Drake.
No stranger to action movies, Mark Wahlberg will be playing Drake’s mentor and father figure, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. For a large period of the Uncharted movie’s development, Wahlberg had actually been attached to the lead role of Drake himself. It's nice to see that, even though the filmmakers went in a different direction, they still found room for Marky Mark to appear.
Other actors working on the project include Grey’s Anatomy star Sophia Taylor Ali, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Tati Gabrielle, and legendary action hero Antonio Banderas. None of their characters has been confirmed so far. However, we’d bet a fair bit of treasure on Banderas playing the film’s baddie.

Uncharted movie plot
As you might have already clocked, 24-year-old Tom Holland looks noticeably younger than Drake does in the games. And you’d be right. The movie is, in fact, a ‘prequel’ of sorts. It will delve into Nate’s origins as an international adventurer, as well as exploring his early relationship with Sully. Sony clearly sees franchise potential if the film is a hit.
Other than that, we have no idea what the film’s actual story will entail – though we’d wager it’ll see Drake travelling around the world on the hunt for some mysterious (and valuable) long-lost artefact. Filming has been taking place in and around Germany and Spain, so there’s definitely some globetrotting involved.

Uncharted movie trailer
We’re a bit early for a trailer on this one yet, seeing as the film is still in production. Cameras started rolling in March 2020 but were promptly put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Filming resumed in July – prompting star Tom Holland to post a celebratory picture of his on-set chair on Instagram (see below). It’ll likely be a while before we see any official images or even a teaser trailer, though.
