Legendary programmer John Carmack, the man who made PC gaming viable, isn’t sold on Facebook’s Metaverse. The Facebook-employed, high-ranking VR developer has made his thoughts on the matter very public. He believes that if anyone will be able to make a Metaverse work, Facebook isn’t the company to do it.
After the company revealed it was diverting its focus from social media to Metaverse technology, Carmack hosted his own keynote. During the hour-long video, the infamous programmer explained his issues with the technology.

During his keynote, Carmack explained that he has been fighting against the company’s Metaverse plans. The programmer revealed that he believes any company that goes out looking to build the metaverse will fail. Instead, that growth needs to be organic instead of juggling every plate from the start.
He said:
“I have been pretty actively arguing against every single metaverse effort that we have tried to spin up internally in the company from even pre-acquisition time. I have pretty good reasons to believe that setting out to build the metaverse is not actually the best way to wind up with the metaverse.”
The programmer continued to explain that the key to a successful metaverse is a single universal app that everything stems from. Facebook’s Metaverse doesn’t have that, and Carmack sees that as a big issue.
“The most obvious path to the metaverse is that you have one single universal app, something like ‘Roblox,'” Carmack said. “I just don’t believe that one player — one company — winds up making all the right decisions for this.”

What Zuckerberg wants, Zuckerberg gets
Despite not believing in Facebook’s ability to give the world the metaverse wants to, Carmack revealed that everything is going full steam ahead at the company. The programmer will go all-in on Zuckerberg’s vision ― hardware, software and everything else.
“Mark Zuckerberg has decided that now is the time to build the metaverse, so enormous wheels are turning and resources are flowing and the effort is definitely going to be made,” he said.
Carmack’s challenge right now is making sure Facebook’s Metaverse succeeds in a timely manner. The programmer explained that if he’s “in front of a video crew and a camera in physical reality doing this talk” next year he’s going to be “really disappointed”.
He said:
“I want to be walking around the halls or walking around the stage as my avatar in front of thousands of people, getting the feed across multiple platforms.”
