Marvel’s What If? Season 2 will be much ‘wilder’ than the first

The first of Marvel’s What If? managed to give us Marvel Zombies, the death of The Avengers, and an incredible Doctor Strange episode. But what does What If? Season 2 have in store for all of us MCU fans?

According to director Bryan Andrews, there’s a lot on the cards for Season 2 of Marvel’s anthology. Furthermore, the new season will be much “wilder” than the original.

What to expect from What If? Season 2

Revealed in a discussion regarding the success of What If? Season 1, Andrews was asked what’s next for the show. While details were kept vague, Andrews said What If? Season 2 is going to get “wilder,” promising that things won’t be as limited as Season 1.

“Obviously more unique stories that slowly get a little bit wilder. The first season Kevin wanted to keep it a little bit closer to the vest, have a little thing that was different and that little thing made these things different, but still tied very much to either a moment in the movies or a particular film itself,” Andrews says to Deadline. “Now there’s more films and things to pull from, so we don’t have to have just a tiny moment.”

Despite sticking to moments from the MCU, What If? Season 2 will supposedly introduce a version of Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert’s 1602, which is pretty exciting. Many fans are also waiting to see the backstory of the Gamora variant from the What If? Season 1 finale, as the episode was cut due to time constraints but has been confirmed for Season 2.

Unfortunately, there are will likely not be any T’Challa episodes, which were the highlight of the original. With the death of Chadwick Boseman, that character has sadly been retired.

What If? Season 3 will be even crazier

It seems that Marvel and Disney are aware of how popular the first season was, as Andrews has already mentioned Season 3, even though What If? Season 2 hasn’t come out yet. This probably isn’t a huge surprise since there’s a lot of material they can get from this concept and we hope they make the MCU feel fresher as a result.

“We can expand out and things can get a little bit wackier. We take it up a notch in season two and then in season three we just go even wackier,” continues Andrews. “In season two, we have different characters that we haven’t really got a chance to play with before and we see how they’ll integrate with some of the favorites that come back. There’s lots of really cool stuff and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Fans should definitely check out What If? Season 1 on Disney+ if they haven’t yet. What If? Season 2 is expected to come out in early 2023.
