There used to be several fool-proof methods to do it, but the app keeps updating and rendering them useless. But that's why we're here to sort the problem out.

How to take a screenshot on Snapchat without them knowing

There are several methods which work, while others have stopped working. One method that surely works is taking a picture of the message with another phone's camera. That is foolproof and will always work, regardless of the app updating.

But that requires another phone or device, is there a simple method? If you have an Android phone you could try screen recording, here's how to do it:

  • Swipe down from the top of your screen and open the Quick Settings page, you should find "Screen record". If it's not there, try checking out the second page or adding it by editing the page with the pencil icon
  • Go to the snap you wish to save while the recording is active
  • Stop the recording once you've finished

Users have reported varying results with this, so try it out first to see if it works. Alternatively, you can ask Google Assistant to take a screenshot while you're viewing the snap, by simply asking "Ok Google, take a screenshot".

Another foolproof method is screen mirroring on another device, for example, a computer or TV, and then recording the screen there. That surely will bypass the application.

What methods of taking a screenshot will alert the user?

On previous versions of the app, you could put the phone in Airplane Mode to bypass its notification that you've taken a screenshot. But that doesn't seem to work anymore. Nor does the trick to delete the cache from the app, after putting the phone in Airplane Mode.

Also, if you have an iPhone then the screen recording trick won't work as that will send an instant notification to the other Snapchat user.
