Minecraft, that world famous game of building and surviving, is due the first part of its Caves and Cliffs update imminently. So we thought we’d take a look and see whether the good people over at Mojang have got around to making a Minecraft PS5 upgrade of the game. Or have they been too busy making caves and cliffs? We’ll consider the answers to these questions below.

Can you play Minecraft on PS5?

Let’s get the easy question out of the way first. While there is no PS5 version of Minecraft, it is possible to play the game on your PS5 console. The PlayStation 4 edition is compatible with the PS5, and you can just buy and download it from the PlayStation store. It will run in (more or less) the same way as it did on the PS4. You can even use PSVR, if you want to.

How to Play Minecraft on PS5

To play Minecraft on your PS5, you need to ensure that your system is updated to the latest software. Sony are also keen to add the disclaimer that some features available on PS4 may be absent, due to backwards compatibility not necessarily transferring all functionalities.

In order to play Minecraft on PS5, you can follow one of several paths:

  • Insert a PS4 game disc
  • Transfer a digital copy of the game from your PS4 to your PS5 using WiFi data transfer
  • Download and install the PS4 game onto your PS5

Any of these options will allow you to play Minecraft on your PS5.

Will there a be a Minecraft PS5 upgrade? If so, when?

Console specific editions of Minecraft are legacy games. The decision was made some time ago to create a more universal Minecraft experience for gamers. This culminated in the Bedrock Edition of the game. It was almost certainly inspired in part by the drive toward cross-play gaming, and the ability to play the same game with friends, no matter what console you are using. So there will almost certainly not be a PS5 specific version of Minecraft. But will there be an upgrade to the game for the PS5, to take advantage of its new features and capabilities?

At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation as to whether or not there is work being done on an optimised PS5 edition of Minecraft Bedrock. And that’s not a huge surprise. As the owners of Minecraft, Microsoft won’t likely be in a hurry to provide a newer edition of the game to Sony users. If anything, they’d be more likely to postpone this, to try to lure more players onto their own platform. On the balance of probability, you can expect an upgraded version to arrive eventually. We just don’t know when. But in the meantime, when those caves and cliffs arrive, you should still be able to enjoy exploring.
