Genshin Impact error code 4201 - how to fix the connection error on Android, PC and PS4

Genshin Impact Error Code 4201

Genshin Impact error code 4201 is yet another Genshin issue that frustrates players with server issues.

With plenty of other issues to avoid, such as the Genshin Login error, or error code 9004, this additional error code is yet another that players will need to fix if they see it.

So, here's how to fix it.

What is Error Code 4201?

Genshin Impact error code 4201 presents players with the message:

Failed to connect to the server
Error code: 4201

Perhaps obviously, this error is primarily about your connection with the Genshin servers. If you receive this error message, then there's a pretty good chance that your device is experiencing some connectivity issues.

It does seem that this error occurs more frequently when the Genshin Impact servers are down. It's always worth checking the server status, in case the issue is at their end. You can do this by following them on Twitter.

But if you've checked the servers, and they are fine, what else can you do to remedy the situation?

How To Fix Genshin Impact Error Code 4201

Assuming that the Genshin Impact game servers are working, then this points to a potential issue at the user's end. Happily, there are a number of solutions that are worth trying, to see if they resolve your issue, and let you back into the Genshin world.

Check your internet

First, make sure your internet connection is working correctly. This may sound incredibly obvious, but it's absolutely worth checking. Try using a different device. Try opening a website page. It may also be worth restarting your router.

Other things to consider in this regard include making certain that you don't have multiple devices and apps all competing for bandwidth, and trying a wired connection instead of a wireless one.

If you are already using a wired connection, then consider setting up a mobile hotspot and using a cellular network instead of Wi-Fi, to identify whether this is the root cause of the error.

VPN

Another relatively common cause of this error is when a player is using a VPN. If you find that your internet is working correctly, then double-check in case you have an active VPN. Apparently, MiHoYo can detect VPNs and then block them.

If so, it is possible that this is interfering with your connection to the Genshin servers. You can try switching it off, and see whether this resolves your issue. Alternatively, if you don't have a VPN, then it may be worth trying one, and seeing whether this resolves the issue. This can work if the error is specifically linked to your local server.

Run The Game As Admin

Giving your game Administrator privileges can stop your computer from blocking the game. To do this:

  • Go to the Genshin Impact executable file.
  • Right-click it and select Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab, and tick the box marked Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click Apply, then OK.

If all else fails...

You've checked your internet settings. You know you aren't using a VPN. The Genshin servers are all working just fine. You've tried turning your device off and on and tried to relaunch the game.

If none of this is working, then the last option to consider is to uninstall and then reinstall the game. This is, clearly, a last-resort move.

As we noted earlier, very often Error Code 4201 arises because of a server error at MiHoYo's end. So sometimes, just waiting for a few hours will be enough to get back online.

Once resolved, let's hope you don't run into any Genshin Impact lag or your Genshin Impact won't launch, either.
