Like James Bond never says, a faulty eject button can be problematic. At least you are unlikely to be trying to press your PS5 eject button in a hail of bullets or during a car chase. But it's still extremely annoying when you can't remove a game disc. Happily, there are solutions that mean you can extricate that disc from your PS5.
We'll run through what you need to know to get that disc out of your console, and also look at some of the possible reasons it got stuck in the first place.
How to eject your disc manually
If your disc is absolutely stuck, then you can remove it. But to do this, you're going to need a well-lit space, a table, and a cross-head screwdriver. Then, according to Sony, here's what you do:
- Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off your PS5 console, then remove all cables and devices from the console.
- Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface and remove the base.
- Position the console so that the screw hole for the base is facing you, the PS logo is facedown and the disc slot is on your left side.
- Place your palms near the top corners and grip the edge of the cover. Gently pull the cover up and towards yourself. You may hear a click.The cover lifts away.
- With the cover removed, look for black rings on the optical drive, including a circle of black plastic film. You can remove this film, or push through it to reach the screw that it is covering. (Newer consoles may not have this plastic cover.)
- Using a #1 Phillips or a cross-head screwdriver, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until the full disc is almost completely visible.
- Gently remove the disc. Do not forcibly pull the disc from the optical drive.
- Replace the bottom cover by positioning it slightly away (about 2 cm or 3/4 inch) from the top edge and sliding it back into place.You hear an audible click when the cover is secured.
- Reconnect all cables and turn on the console.
It's really important that you don't attempt to switch on the console while it's in pieces. This may sound really obvious. But still, don't do it. Of course, there is another option worth exploring as well to remove the disc, and that's by using your DualSense controller.

How to eject disc using PS5 controller
It's possible that the issue is with the PS5 eject button, rather than the eject mechanism. And so you can try using your controller to eject the disc, via the UI. This is certainly quicker and easier than dismantling your console. Here's what you do:
- On the Home Screen, select the tile for the game whose disc you want to eject
- Press the Options button on your DualSense controller
- On the menu that then appears, at the very bottom is the option to eject the disc
- Select this, and the disc will eject
As lovely and simple as this is, it's also useful to know why the disc might have become stuck in the first place. We'll cover that next.
Why doesn't my PS5 eject button work?
Most commonly, there are three main reasons why your PS5 might be struggling to eject a disc:
- A damaged ejection mechanism - has your PS5 been dropped, or hit at any point?
- Dirty components - did you insert a really dirty disc, for example?
- A firmware issue - it's worth making sure your system is fully up to date.
It may also be possible that there is something physically obstructing the disc, so this is always worth checking as well. Thankfully, Sony did build in contingencies in case you have trouble with ejecting a disc using the eject button. It's also worth bearing in mind that if there is a fault with your console, then you may be able to make a claim under warranty.
