If you've been eagerly following news of the PSVR 2, or looking to learn more about Horizon Forbidden West, then you might have stumbled across some news about another Horizon game. Horizon Call of the Mountain was announced at CES 2022, getting fans of the franchise very excited indeed. Today, we'll cover everything that was announced, to keep you up to speed on the latest instalment of the Horizon series.

Horizon Call of the Mountain Release Date

The announcement of Horizon Call Of The Mountain was something of a surprise, given that we've all been waiting for the release of Forbidden West (hopefully arriving on February 18th 2022). The reveal may have got us all talking, but it was certainly light on details.

At this point, there is no confirmed release date for Call of the Mountain, other than to say that it is being made specifically for the PSVR 2. So pretty much the only certainty we have surrounding its release date is that it won't be until the PSVR 2 has actually launched. And at the moment, we don't have a release date for that either. So...yeah. There is cautious optimism that PSVR 2 will arrive before the end of 2022. But whether Call of the Mountain is a launch title, remains to be seen.

What We Know So Far

There isn't an enormous amount to go on at this stage, but there are a few certainties that have already been confirmed. As we mentioned above, Call of The Mountain will be a brand-new, standalone adventure set in the world of Horizon. The game is being created specifically for PSVR 2, and will certainly be looking to capitalise on the technical prowess of the new headset. Think haptic feedback in the controllers and headset, and visuals that benefit from the 4K, HDR OLED screen.

Perhaps most interestingly, is the fact that the player will not be controlling Aloy. Rather, as per a PlayStation.Blog post from Jan-Bart van Beek, Studio Director at Guerilla, this story will be told:

Through the eyes of an entirely new character. You will also meet Aloy, other familiar faces, and new characters along the way

We don't yet know who this protagonist will be. But we are told that we will be introduced to them "soon". Details around the storyline are currently non-existent.

Any Other Info?

The game is being developed by Guerilla and Firesprite, a UK developer with a background in VR game development. Firesprite was bought by Sony back in 2021. They had previously worked with Sony producing games such as The Persistence and The Playroom VR.

We expect this to be exclusive for PSVR 2 and PS5. It would be a real surprise if a AAA title such as this was made available to rival VR headsets at launch. It's unlikely that this game will be compatible with PSVR 1 or the PS4. So if you want to play it, start looking for a PS5 now. And hopefully, by the time this comes out, you'll have managed to find one.

As we mentioned earlier, there is currently no confirmed release date for the game. As such, you won't be able to pre-order at this point. But we are hoping that this is being prepped as a launch title for the PSVR 2. If so, keep your eyes peeled for bundles.

As ever, we'll keep you up-to-date as soon as more information drops. So keep checking in.
