Factorio's construction and management simulation involves blueprints, of course. But how to make them is another question.
Blueprints contain structure layouts. This is the definition of the item for both the game and in real life.
Yet blueprints in Factorio let you copy, save, and share the actual layout of any part of a factory. These can then be used for various land areas where you want to build and construct your factory.

How to make blueprints
In order to make blueprints, the first thing you need to do is to switch the game itself to blueprint mode by pressing ALT+B.
Upon doing so, a blue square will appear in the bottom-right part of your cursor. If this happens, it means that you are now in blueprint mode.
The next step is to click and drag over the area where you would want to construct and build your factory or even a part of it. Once you do it, you can name your blueprint as well as providing a description about it.
Also, don't forget to move parameters by choosing an icon which will appear in your inventory. Edit your blueprint right away, and click the 'Save Blueprint' once you are done with customizing it.

How to use blueprints
As reported by PC Gamer, you must go to your inventory to get and use your blueprints.
Left-click on your desired blueprint. Then drag and place it whenever you want it to be constructed.
Yet even if the blueprint illustrates how you would want your factory to be designed, you will need drones to do it.
At first, you need to do the construction by yourself. But during the later parts of the game, you would be able to instruct the drones to continuously develop and build the blueprint design.
