Donating your games consoles in the UK: How to donate an old Xbox One, PS4 or Nintendo Switch to charity

Whenever a new console launches, one of the first aspects that a customer thinks about, is what to do with the now-older console.

Some give it as a hand-me-down to a friend or family member, while others take it into a store for cash. But in recent years there’s been other, innovative ways that can prolong its lifespan for someone else.

This is where ‘Get Well Gamers’ come in; they are a registered Scottish charity that works across the UK in delivering donated consoles to children’s hospitals and other medical facilities.

With that, here’s a rundown on what electronics they accept, and how to get in contact.

What is 'Get Well Gamers'?

The charity was established in 2014 by James Stewart and Stephanie Gilmartin, who have recently stepped away, with an aim to manage and distribute consoles and other electronics to children at many hospitals.

As their well-designed website shows, you only need to follow this link to prepare your console, tablet or something else and send them a message.

It’s important to keep in mind that they no longer accept:

• Nintendo Wii Consoles

• Playstation 2 Consoles
• Playstation 2 Games
• Xbox Original Consoles
• Xbox 360 Consoles
• Wii Balance Boards
• Guitar Hero/Rock Band Instruments
• Steering Wheels
• Skylanders

However, if you are involved with a medical facility who badly needs an electronic product, you can follow this link to get in touch with the charity, where they will be able to arrange something for you and your patients.

How to Help

Alongside donating your electronics, they also ask for streamers to help raise awareness for the charity, which can be followed and watched here. It doesn’t matter if your subscriber count is 1 or 1000, awareness is key here, and you could probably stream ’Rosco McQueen’ on the original PlayStation if you so wish.

They also ask for any cash donations, which you can also integrate into your stream. The below tweet clearly shows what certain amounts go towards.

With much excitement for the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5, it’s also good to look in that storage unit or cupboard, to see if you can send off your legacy console or tablet to the charity.

With hospitals rapidly filling up due to the pandemic, it could be a great thing for patients to play Spider-Man: Miles Morales on a PS4 Pro, or even start a Mario Kart 64 tournament.
