How to connect PS4 controller to PS5 console

Connecting a PS4 controller to a PS5 console is very easy - there are just a couple of quick steps you need to follow, and then you'll be merrily using your DualShock 4 on your shiny new PlayStation 5. Here's what you need to do...

  • Use your charging cable to connect the PS4 controller to the PS5 console, using any of the USB ports on the console
  • Press the PS button on your controller to turn on the controller
  • One the screen, you should be prompted to select which user is using the controller - simply select yourself from the profile options presented

Which PS5 games can you play with PS4 controller?

In a helpful blog post aimed at PS4 users who are upgrading to PS5, Sony asked itself, "Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?"

The official answer to that questions look like this: "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

In a lengthy FAQ page, Sony added, "For PS4 games played on PS5, players can use either the DualShock 4 wireless controller or the DualSense wireless controller.

"PS5 games will require use of the DualSense wireless controller, as they have been designed to take advantage of its immersive new features."

Basically, you can only use the PS4 controller on the PS5 if you are playing a PS4-era game. But if you're playing a brand new PS5-only game, you'll need to use the PS5 DualSense controller.
