With the latest generation of the Xbox console, Microsoft treated us to two different editions: the Series X and the Series S. The Series S, which we are focusing on here, is the smaller, cheaper and quieter version of the two.
But one of the big appeals of the new generation of consoles is the ability to play games in stunning 4k resolution.
So the question is, can the small, cheap, quiet version of the Xbox fulfil this requirement?
Does Xbox Series S Run In 4K?
The Xbox Series S, by virtue of its lower specification, does not run in native 4K. The default setting for this console is 1440p (also known as Quad HD).
However, the Xbox Series S is capable of upscaling games to 4K resolution when connected to an ultra HD display. It is also capable of streaming 4K media through streaming platforms.
So games and media on the Xbox Series S will still look absolutely excellent, even if it isn't running "true" 4K resolution.

What's the big deal with 4K?
4K native resolution means that content has more pixels, and is, therefore, sharper, more detailed and nicer to look at.
With the next-gen consoles launching in late 2020, 4K is fast becoming the industry standard in gaming. This means that to get the most out of the latest games, 4K TVs may become even more necessary.
Of course, this doesn't mean that gaming on a 1440p or even 1080p screen is bad. With so many other technological advancements packed into the Series S, you'll be sure to still get that next-gen experience.

Can The Xbox Series S Run 120FPS?
While we've already acknowledged that the Series S isn't set up to provide native 4K, it can nevertheless provide support for games at 120fps.
It doesn't mean every game will run at this speed. And additionally, some games will run at 120fps on the Series X, but not on the Series S. This is because the series X is the more powerful console, and therefore can cope with greater demands.
One important feature on the new generation of Xbox consoles if FPS boost, which boosts the fps in certain games, many of which will then be playable at 120fps.
If you want to take advantage of this, then it's important to ensure your Series S is set up correctly:
- Most games that support FPS boost will enable it automatically. But if you need to enable it manually, go to Manage game > Compatibility options. Then just tick the box to enable FPS boost.
You also need a 120 Hz-capable TV, and your Series S display settings need to be set to 120Hz. To ensure your console is setup correctly:
- Make sure the console is fully updated: Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates. Install any outstanding updates.
- To change your console display settings to 120 Hz: Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Select Refresh rate > 120 Hz.
- Finally, make sure you have enabled FPS boost: In My games & apps, highlight the game desired, and then press Menu > Manage game & add-ons > Compatibility options.
- Enable FPS boost.
Your Xbox Series S will now be set up to run eligible games at 120 fps.
