Battlefield 2042 Xbox vs PS5: Differences, Graphics, Price, Crossplay and More!

Battlefield 2042 is the hotly anticipated new release from EA and Dice, in the Battlefield series. Due to be released in October, the game will be available on both next-gen and last-gen platforms. Today though, we'll be comparing the Xbox Series X|S version with the PS5 version, to see what we glean about the differences between them. In the battle for gaming supremacy, this will be another skirmish between the two tech giants. Let's see how things are looking.

What are the differences?

We already know there will be some pretty fundamental differences between users on this generation of hardware, vs the last generation. Maps will be larger, there will be significantly more players involved in a single battle, and there will inevitably be big improvements in graphics, load times, and the like.

But comparisons between the two next-gen consoles are a little less obvious. So let's compare what they offer across all the most important categories.

Graphics

First, let's look at graphics. On the Xbox Series X|S, Battlefield 2042 will support HDR10 , 4K Ultra HD, and 60 fps. In short, it's going to look beautiful. It is also listed on the Microsoft Store as being "Optimised for Xbox Series X|S".

In comparison, Sony are a little cagier about what exactly the game will look like. Their store doesn't list any of the same capabilities as those listed on the Microsoft page. But that doesn't mean the game won't look as good. We'd be astonished if the PS5 version doesn't offer similar levels of graphical performance. We know the console is capable of 4K and 60 fps, as well as HDR10. So it seems reasonable to assume that if Xbox is getting those features, Sony will have insisted on the same. After all, why would they want to offer an inferior product?

Battlefield 2042 Price

In terms of price, both Sony and Microsoft are pitching at the same price point: £69.99, or £62.99 for the standard edition, if you subscribe to EA Play. This is about ten pounds more than the game will cost on Xbox One or PS4, but that isn't entirely unreasonable when you consider that your gameplay experience will be superior on the newer consoles. There is also a Gold Edition and an Ultimate Edition, for those who want to grab even more content. The Ultimate Edition starts at £109.99, and the Gold Edition is £89.99.

Interestingly though, a PC gamer with a high-end gaming rig, will still only be charged the same as a PS4 or Xbox One X user. This is perhaps more controversial, as these players will still get the superior version of Battlefield 2042, but for a lower price.

Battlefield 2042 Crossplay

At the time of writing, cross play has yet to be formally confirmed. DICEhave confirmed they will share more information at a later date. This may potentially be as soon as the EA Play event scheduled for July. Cross play is an increasingly popular feature in games. So it feels like there is a possibility we will see this on Battlefield 2042. But we will have to wait and see.

The question over cross-generational play is even thornier. Given the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 will be able to support larger matches and bigger maps than the PS4 or Xbox OneX, there is a question mark about whether the two generations will be compatible. Again, we are watching and waiting for this question to be answered.

Anything else we should know?

We know that Battlefield 2042 has done away with a single-player mode entirely, but will be offering three different multiplayer modes: All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and an as-yet undisclosed third mode which has been described as "a love letter to Battlefield fans".

It has also been confirmed that DICE will deliver four Seasons during the first year of the game's life. There will also be four Battle Passes, four new specialists, and other new content. The game is set for launch on October 22. An open Beta will be available to players in the lead-up to this date.
