The upcoming hero shooter has just been announced, with NetEase revealing the title and some gameplay of Marvel Rivals, an Overwatch-esque game that lets you play as some iconic Marvel heroes and villains in 6v6 matches.

While the Marvel Rivals release date has yet to be revealed, we’re excited to dive into the game during the alpha, but if you’re wondering who you can play as in the game, then look no further than the current roster.

Marvel Rivals characters list

There’s currently 18 confirmed heroes and villains arriving in Marvel Rivals when the game launches, those being:

  • Doctor Strange
  • Scarlet Witch
  • Iron Man
  • Luna Snow
  • Punisher
  • Rocket
  • Groot
  • Loki
  • Spider-Man
  • Hulk
  • Magik
  • Magneto
  • Mantis
  • Storm
  • Peni Parker
  • Black Panther
  • Star Lord
  • Namor

There’s a large variety of characters here, and from the reveal trailer, it seems like distinct gameplay is a major component of Marvel Rivals. Unlike Overwatch, which has limited melee-exclusive characters, Rivals features a few that use their fists instead of guns.

Marvel Rivals features destructible environments, so characters like Hulk can freely destroy obstacles to reach his opponents, while it appears that heroes like Spider-Man will use their agility to make it difficult for enemies to land shots. We’re really excited to use Magik’s portals to trick the enemy team.

Some reports, including the report from TheStreamr that revealed the game ahead of the official announcement, state that Thor will be playable in the game. However, the reveal trailer doesn’t show the God of Thunder, but NetEase are promising post-launch content will release additional heroes into the game.

Additionally, in a second report, TheStreamr suggests that it has seen an early build that includes Moon Knight. However, he doesn’t appear in the reveal trailer, so it’s unclear as to whether he’s been removed, delayed, or will eventually released at launch. There's also going to be a playable Doctor Doom, according to the same report, and considering he's a major part of Rivals' story, that doesn't seem to off-base.

That’s all of the characters in Marvel Rivals right now, but the list will consistently grow as the game receives more support. Hopefully, the game will get a decent range of A-tier characters and lesser-known, yet equally fun heroes.
