But transportation in Cities: Skylines 2 isn’t just for getting people to and from work. It also plays a big part in your city’s economy since it will affect how resources will be delivered across the map.
The Cities: Skylines 2 modes of transportation are categorized into two groups- public transport and cargo. There are plenty of different means of travel between these two categories, so let’s have a closer look.
Cities: Skylines 2 modes of public transport
Public transport will serve as the primary means of travel throughout your city for most citizens in Cities: Skylines 2. They won’t all be available right away, but you’ll unlock them as you progress through the game.
Buses
This will be the first mode of transportation you unlock and will prove to be effective for a long time. Buses become available after building a Bus Depot in your city.
Taxis
Taxis function a lot like personal vehicles and can bring in new citizens to your sprawling city. They don’t require lines to operate, but their low capacity makes taxis a big contributor to traffic congestion.
Build a Taxi Depot to give your citizens access to taxis.
Trains
Trains are extremely efficient means of transportation as they can carry a large number of passengers and cargo. The drawback is that they’re pretty expensive to unlock, requiring a Rail Yard and tracks to be built in your city.
Subway
Just like trains, subways are fast, efficient, and expensive to set up. However, they do have the added benefit of being built underground, saving you a ton of space for other infrastructures in your metropolis.
Unlocking subways require you to build a Subway Yard and tracks.
Trams
You can maximize the efficiency of roads you’ve already built by running tram lines through them. Building a tram system for your city will be pretty expensive, but they produce less air and noise pollution compared to other modes of transportation.
Gaining access to trams requires you to build a Tram Depot in your city.
Water transportation
Ships have a large passenger capacity and can transport people to and from other cities. To be able to travel via water transportation, you’ll need to connect the harbors between two cities.
Air transportation
Another great way to move from one city to another is through the air. Planes don’t have the same passenger capacity as trains and ships, but they more than makeup for that with their speed.
To unlock air transportation in Cities: Skylines 2, you’ll need to build airports. Building an airport requires a large amount of space, so plan wisely.
Cities: Skylines 2: modes of cargo transport
Your citizens won’t be the only ones moving around in Cities: Skylines 2. To help continue your city’s growth, resources need to be transferred to and from different places as cargo.
Cargo trains
Though you will have delivery trucks and vans early on, cargo trains will be the first big step in improving the transportation of resources throughout your city. Building a Cargo Train Terminal is required for using cargo trains.
Cargo ships
These ships are highly effective at transporting a large amount of resources since they have a 1000-ton capacity. Cargo ships are relatively slow, but they are unaffected by road traffic.
You’ll need to have Cargo Harbors in your city to unlock cargo ships.
Air cargo transport
Just like with passenger planes, cargo airplanes have a lower capacity but travel at a much higher speed. You can start using cargo planes after upgrading your airport to have Cargo Terminals.
