In the middle of your journey through Larian’s latest RPG, you may suddenly ask yourself: can you change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3? Creating your very own character is a huge part of the Dungeons and Dragons experience, so selecting your race is a pretty big decision to make.

While choosing a race will set the base for how your character will look during your playthrough, it can also influence how you interact with certain companions and NPCs. Races also have different features making them more suitable for certain classes and playstyles.

So let’s go ahead and let’s discover if you can change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is always interesting to mix things up midway through your progress, isn’t it?

Is it possible to change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3?

No, there is no way to change your race in Baldur's Gate 3, at least not permanently. So make sure you’re happy with how your character design, before finishing the character creation process and starting the game’s campaign.

Still, if you feel the need for a change of pace in the middle of your Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough, you can opt to speak with an NPC named Withers for a quick respec, but only on your class. Withers will let you change your character’s class after paying him 100 gold pieces.

However, Larian Studios has confirmed that they are working on a feature that will let you change your character’s race after starting the game. The release date and other details on how this feature will work have not yet been revealed but we will update this guide once we know more about this.

How to temporarily change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3

For a temporary race change in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can use an item called Mask of the Shapeshifter. Equipping this mask will give you access to a skill called Shapeshift.

Use Shapeshift and you will get a list of appearances to choose from that include a variety of races. Unfortunately, the only way to obtain the Mask of the Shapeshifter is by purchasing the Deluxe Edition of the game.

However, there are certain classes like Bards, Rogues, and Clerics that can learn a spell called Disguise Self which basically has the same effect as Shapeshift. The effect of these abilities will wear off after taking a long rest.
