Baldur's Gate 3 Elder Brithvar bug

The world of Dungeons and Dragons is full of NPCs that can either aid your party or impede your adventure. We’ve come up with this guide on how to fix the Baldur’s Gate 3 Elder Brithvar bug since the Duergar is involved in a handful of quests.

Like several other NPCs in the game, how Elder Brithvar interacts with you and your companions will depend on the way you tackle the quests he is tied to. This type of dynamic between the player and NPCs helps keep the game feel fresh with each playthrough.

So how do you get rid of the Elder Brithvar bug? Let’s find out so you can continue your progress through the fantasy RPG.

How to fix the Elder Brithvar bug

To get past the Elder Brithvar bug, you can try dropping any smoke-related items from your inventory. So far, getting rid of smoke powder satchels and smokepowder bombs seems to do the trick.

With this bug, speaking with Elder Brithvar will only have him say “Private Conversation, leave us”. This makes it difficult or maybe even impossible to progress through certain quests.

Some players have found that when meeting Brithvar and his friend Kur for the first time, speaking with the elder before his companion will result in the bug. In any case, make sure to save your progress before engaging in conversation with either of these two NPCs. Hopefully, this bug will be solved in an upcoming patch, Larian please.

Where is Elder Brithvar located in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Elder Brithvar can be found in Grymforge, a location in the sprawling subterranean region known as the Underdark. There are several ways to enter the Underdark, but the quickest way to Grymforge seems to be through a well in the Blighted Village.

After entering this well, you’ll end up in a cave called the Whispering Depths. If it’s your first time here, you’ll need to clear the area of a bunch of arachnids including their matriarch.

Once you’ve made it past the spiders and into the Underdark, look for Gekh Coal to give you a quest involving Thrin’s missing boots. This quest will grant you access to the boats that will take you to Grymforge.
