As you are aware, Warzone 2 is coming to PlayStation, Xbox and PC and the game is going to be free to play.
With the recent reveal of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, players are wondering what will happen to their COD Points. Specifically, whether or not those points will transfer to Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. After all, those points come at a very real cost to players, given they need to be bought with real money.
This is especially relevant now, as Modern Warfare 2 will be available on Steam. The first time a Call of Duty game has been available on that platform since 2017. This is, as the kids say, a Big. Deal.
For anyone who has been playing Call of Duty on PC over the last few years, the only option available has been to use Battle.net. But many will be considering going to Steam in future. The question is, what impact will this have on your points? Let's find out.
Will COD Points Transfer To Warzone 2 And Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2?
Before you rush out and purchase on one platform or another, you may be concerned about what's going to happen to those precious COD points. And the answer, it seems, depends a lot on whether or not you use the same platform as you've previously been using.
Let's explain. Twitter user @TheNanikoss (the account is currently suspended) a Call of Duty data miner/leaker, published a message, purported to be from an Activision Player Support agent:
In that message, the agent states that "please be informed that cod points are saved on the platform account...If you have CoD Points on Battlenet, they will not carry over as you play the game on Steam and vice versa".
In other words, if you are planning to switch from one platform to another, don't plan on taking your points with you. You're best spending them.
The picture is a little murkier if you are planning on using the same platform, however. Historically, points have been transferable between games. So it would be a surprise if this wasn't the case, as long as you are using the same platform as before.
While this will be frustrating news for many, it really comes down to whether your priority is to keep hold of those points or use a different platform than the one you have currently.
How Do Call Of Duty Points Work?
The points themselves are fairly easy to understand. They are used primarily to purchase cosmetics for your characters, or a Battle Pass. They can be purchased via the in-game menu, or through console storefronts.
As is so often the case, when buying points, the more points you buy, the better value for the money they represent. This is why some players might have thousands of points sitting in their account, worth literally hundreds of bucks.
Importantly, as we mentioned above, points have historically been linked with your Activision account, meaning that they are transferable across titles. If @TheNanikoss is correct though, this may only apply when you remain on the same platform as before.
In some ways, this makes sense. After all, PC players haven't had access to COD on Steam for five years, so there would have been very little demand from players for points to be transferrable across platforms.
Of course, things can always change, and it may be that points will continue to be linked with Activision accounts rather than being platform specific. As always, we'll let you know if the situation gets updated.

What About Warzone Progression And Skins?
Some players are also wondering whether their Warzone progression and skins will transfer over to warzone 2 when it comes out.
But the news isn't encouraging. According to the Washington Post:
The new version of “Warzone” will reboot player progression and inventories, meaning players’ current skins and weapon blueprints will not transfer to the new game.
In other words, players will be starting from scratch, as a separate experience from the current Warzone. You can, however, keep access to those skins and other cosmetics by playing Warzone Caldera, which will remain as a separate experience.
It's not entirely clear why this is the case, but it is possible that compatibility issues between the new game and the existing one would explain why this decision has been taken.
So while this may be disappointing for some, hopefully, the new features and ideas will more than compensate. It won't be long now though, before players will get to experience the game for themselves.
