When will the Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update Launch?

Update: CD Projekt RED has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt next-gen update releases this year. In a new tweet, the developer revealed that you’ll be able to play the updated version on December 12th, 2022.

Original: Confirmation that the upgraded version of The Witcher 3 came on July 10th, with the message, " More info coming soon". At the time of writing, we are still waiting for that info. We do have a few breadcrumbs to hold onto though. @gamebowski, a PR manager for CD Projekt Red, did confirm back in March, that the next-gen update is expected to be released in the second half of 2021.

Given that we are on the verge of September, that doesn't leave us with much longer to wait. We have four months until the end of the year. Which makes it a decent bet that they want to release this in time for Christmas shopping season. On the other hand, after the problems with Cyberpunk 2077, you feel that they aren't going to release the game until it's definitely ready. Especially one so beloved by its fans.

Update

CD Projekt Red has now confirmed that the PS5 upgrade for The Witcher 3 will not now be released until 2022. In a Twitter post on October 20th, they stated that the decision to postpone was based on recommendations from the development team of the game. The revised release timetable is now the second quarter of 2022.

There are probably a few factors influencing this. The first is that the upgrade of Cyberpunk 2077 has also been postponed until next year, and it may be that they have needed to reallocate some of their teams to try to get both games finished. Another reason is that after the disaster that was the original launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Prokekt Red daren't risk releasing a game that isn't finished. The backlash would not be good. When you look at the response to the GTA Trilogy - Definitive Edition , there'seven less incentive to rush something out.

While this is perhaps a little frustrating, The Witcher 3 is still playable on PS5, and waiting a few months more for a more polished product is surely the best option for everyone. As CD Projekt Red stated in their own Twitter message:

Apologies for the extended wait, but we want to make it right.

What will The Witcher 3 PS5 upgrade include?

We do have slightly more certainty about what the upgraded game is going to include. In a popular move, anyone who already owns the game will get the upgrade version as a free upgrade. And as part of that upgrade, users will have access to free DLC. We don't have much more information, other than the fact that it is inspired by the Netflix series.

Moreover, the game is being advertised as the Complete Edition. This means that previously released DLC will be bundled in as well. On PlayStation Store, the PS4 version of the game includes 16 DLCs, and 2 expansion packs: Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine. That's a whole lot of Witcher to look forward to. Especially if, as expected the game sees ray tracing, faster loading times, and other improvements on the PS5. There is a lot to look forward to. We'll update you with more, as we find out.
