PS6 release date - when will the PlayStation 6 come out?

While the specs and price of the PS6 are still unknown, documents from the UK Competition Markets Authority as part of the ongoing Microsoft-Activision merger investigation revealed a rough time frame of when the Sony PlayStation 6 will be released.

PS6 release date rumours

Recent generations of PlayStation have followed a seven-year lifespan, with the PS3 coming out in 2006, the PS4 arriving in 2013, and finally, the PS5 releasing in 2020. If this trend continues, then we’ll see the next iteration of Sony’s PlayStation console debuting in 2027.

However, Sony's response to Microsoft's ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard suggests otherwise. In the document provided to the CMA, Sony touched on the potential launch timing of its new console. The company said:

Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027... By the time SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around [redacted]), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness.

What it basically says is that the next PlayStation console is likely to launch after 2027. In other words, PS6 is expected to be released sometime in 2028. The release date of the next Xbox console also falls somewhere in 2028.

Well, you don't have to wait until that for the next PlayStation console. Because Sony will launch the PS5 Pro in April 2023 with liquid cooling. A PS5 Pro controller is also in the making.

PS6 price speculation

At this early stage, we can only speculate on how much the new console might cost based on history. Sony launched the PS3 at $499. The PS4 arrived at a lower price of $399. Finally, the PS5 cost $499 upon release.

Assuming this upward trajectory continues, the PS6 might cost somewhere around it is safe to say that PS6 will cost more than its predecessors when it arrives. We can expect PS6 to be priced somewhere between $500 and $600.
