The latest iteration of the best-selling basketball simulation game is set to release on September 9, 2022, and people want to know whether NBA 2K23 is cross-platform.

NBA 2K23 will be available on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles, as well as on Steam for PC. Since the game is going to be released on multiple platforms, it would be logical to wonder if NBA 2K23 is cross-platform.

Well, let's clear the doubts regarding whether NBA 2K23 will be cross-platform.

Is NBA 2K23 Cross-Platform?

There was no cross-play or cross-platform multiplayer support in NBA 2K22 or NBA 2K21.

And continuing the past trend, there is no cross-play and cross-platform multiplayer between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in NBA 2K23 either. The official NBA 2K23 FAQ clearly states that "there will not be crossplay between different consoles or PC."

So, we can confirm that NBA 2K23 is not cross-platform. This may be disappointing for those who wish to match-make against their friends or family who play NBA 2K23 on different consoles. It is also worth noting that there is no cross-gen multiplayer, meaning, PS4 users cannot play with PS5 and the same for Xbox One with Series X/S.

A logical reason why NBA 2K23 is not cross-platform is that specific platforms will have advantages over others. For example, a PC has more advanced capabilities than consoles such as creating hotkeys to perform a complex task quicker and easier. It will give PC gamers an unfair advantage over console players.

Does NBA 2K23 Support Cross-Progression?

Although there is no crossplay or cross-platform multiplayer support in NBA 2K23, thankfully, there is cross-progression for MyTeam and VC. However, there is a caveat. The official NBA 2K23 FAQ says:

NBA 2K23 will feature MyTEAM Cross-Progression and a Shared VC Wallet within the same console family (PlayStation®4 <> PlayStation®5, Xbox One <> Xbox Series X|S). MyTEAM Cross-Progression enables all MyTEAM Points, Tokens, cards and progress to be shared across both versions of NBA 2K23 on generations of consoles in the same console family. Similarly, the Shared VC Wallet means any earned or purchased VC is accessible across generations of consoles in the same console family.

As you can see, the cross-progression is limited to the same console family. In other words, it is only applicable for PS4 to PS5, and Xbox One to Series X|S. Sadly, you will not be able to transfer anything between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch.

To add to the confusion, cross-gen access will limit which version of the game you can play. The new-gen version of the game will only be playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S respectively. So the PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game will be playable on both generations of console. But the same won't be true of the PS5 and Series X|S versions.
