Hogwarts Legacy is finally coming out this week with early access beginning on February 7. This version of the game is expected to be the most powerful and gamers are hoping it can run well on their computers. While the game doesn’t come out in a few days, here’s our attempt to fix lag and stuttering in Hogwarts Legacy, if possible.

Stuttering in PC games is, unfortunately, a common thing for the system. No matter how powerful someone’s gaming computer is, some games will have lag and stuttering issues unless the system requirements are met. Console owners won’t have to worry about this but PC gamers will want to avoid these issues as much as possible.

The fact that Hogwarts Legacy is expected to run well on PS5 and Xbox Series also has some PC players worried. Not all gaming computers are created equal but they can all play a game well if the right tinkering is done.

Here’s what we know about fixing the lag and stuttering in Hogwarts Legacy.

How to fix lag and stuttering in Hogwarts Legacy

Since Hogwarts Legacy is expected to be an open-world RPG with plenty of monsters and combat, fans want to avoid any form of lag and stuttering. Though there’s no official way to fix these problems just yet, there are ways for players to avoid them as much as possible.

While there’s no official fix for these issues yet, assuming they exist, Steam did reveal the system requirements to play this game properly. The amount of GB this RPG will take up has also been revealed, getting gamers ready for the title on their respective systems.

It’s also worth noting that the developers are attempting to release Hogwarts Legacy as a Steam Deck-compatible title. This should ensure that some quality control was done to prevent any lag and stuttering since the Steam Deck isn’t as powerful as a quality gaming computer. Just because it beats the Switch doesn’t mean it’s perfect.

Disable CFG

A Reddit user has reported that disabling Control Flow Guard (CFG) has fixed lag and stuttering in Hogwarts Legacy. Here is how to disable CFG:

  • Search "Exploit protection"
  • Click the "Program settings" tab
  • Click the "Add program to customise"
  • Click the "Choose exact file path"
  • Navigate to the HogwartsLegacy folder and select .exe file (likely in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hogwarts Legacy)
  • Scroll down to the "Control flow guard (CFG)"
  • Check the "Override system settings" and toggle the "on" to "off"
  • Click "Apply"
  • Restart your PC

In case you don't know, Control Flow Guard (CFG) is a security feature in the Microsoft Windows operating system that helps prevent code-reuse attacks by monitoring and verifying the control flow of program execution at runtime.

CFG performs checks on the control flow of a program at runtime, which can add some overhead to the execution of the program. If a game is heavily utilizing control flow, the added overhead from CFG checks may cause performance issues, such as stuttering or other forms of lag.

Update graphics drivers and OS

Having all of your systems up to date is the best way to get your PC ready to fix any lag and stuttering in Hogwarts Legacy. From what we’ve seen, this is going to be a powerful game with pretty visuals, so players will want to update their systems as soon as possible.

While outdated graphics drivers and OS won’t immediately make the game unplayable, having them patched up will prevent any possible slowdown. No Harry Potter fan wants to cast spells when everything is slowing down.

If players can update their graphics drivers and OS, that’s one step to preventing any kind of lag and stuttering from interrupting their spell casting. Keeping up to date is the best thing players can do right now unless proven otherwise.

Adjust the game’s graphics settings

Before creating your character and joining your Hogwarts House, players will want to choose between the different Hogwarts Legacy graphics modes. While all gamers will want to play this on max settings, not everyone has the privilege to do so. Thankfully, there are still ways to make the game a fun and playable experience, even if you don’t have the best graphics cards.

Players may want to adjust the graphics and display to Medium or lower to get this game running well. Having the title run at 30 FPS also ensures that Hogwarts Legacy will run competently, avoiding any form of lag and stuttering. While not ideal, this does ensure that the game will run competently.

If you are playing the game on valve's handheld PC, we recommend you use the best Hogwarts Legacy settings for Steam Deck to ensure a smooth and seamless gaming experience.

Be on the lookout for any announcements

Since this is the era of fixing games that have rough launches, there’s no doubt that Hogwarts Legacy will be updated throughout its lifespan to avoid any lag, stuttering, and other bugs. With reviews for the game coming out soon, it will be interesting to see if the game will launch with any bugs that might prevent it from running perfectly.

For now, players will just need to wait for Warner Bros. to say something in regards to fixing the lag and stuttering of Hogwarts Legacy. Hopefully, the game launches in a stable condition, and following the requirements will lead to a good gaming experience. Otherwise, players will need to wait for an update to get the game running well.

Overall, Hogwarts Legacy is expected to be a massive RPG that will make longtime Harry Potter fans happy. The game is expected to come out on February 10, 2023, for the PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
