Elden Ring Won't Install: How To Fix Elden Ring Installation Error

If an action RPG that feels like Dark Souls but also has input from George R.R. Martin sounds like something you might enjoy, then as if by some magical series of coincidences, Elden Ring offers you exactly that. Or maybe you just like rings. But what happens when Elden Ring won't install?

Are you doomed to walk the Earth for the rest of your days, with no hope of actually playing this game? Well...no. We've put together some tips to help you in this eventuality. Here's what you need to know.

How To Fix Elden Ring Installation Error

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is causing the installation error on Elden Ring. But there are a few general troubleshooting steps that are worth trying, in an effort to overcome this issue. Before we get into this, double-check that your PC meets the minimum system requirements. If your computer isn't powerful enough, you're going to struggle to play this game, and will likely run into repeated issues. The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: INTEL CORE I5-8400 or AMD RYZEN 3 3300X
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD RADEON RX 580 4 GB
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 60 GB available space

Assuming your hardware meets the mark, here's what to try next.

Things You Can Try

  • One of the quickest and easiest things to try is a hard reset of your console. Power down your Xbox or PlayStation, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back up again.
  • A similar principle applies on PC - reset your computer and try again.
  • With some other games, an installation error can be caused by having an external hard drive installed on your console. The solution worth trying is to uninstall the game from the external hard drive, disconnect the external hard drive, and install the game on the built-in drive.
  • Occasionally, the issue can arise if there has been a problem during the installation process. You do ahve a couple of options in this situation. On Steam, you can try verifying the integrity of the game files, to identify any incomplete or corrupted files. To do this:
    • Restart your computer and launch Steam
    • Next, you can either right click the game in your Library, or click the gear icon from the game's Library page on the far right
    • From the drop down menu, select Properties...
    • Select the Local Files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files... button
    • Sit and wait for the process to complete. It usually takes several minutes.
  • To perform the same process via the Epic Games launcher:
    • Navigate to the game in your game Library and click the three dots.
    • Once open, click the button marked Verify in the drop-down navigation.
    • Again, wait for a few minutes for this process to complete.
  • If you aren't using Steam, or are on console, you can try uninstalling the game and reinstalling the game from scratch.

If none of these fixes makes a difference, then reach out to the developer for additional support. Alternatively, you can take a look at the official Twitter feed @EldenRing for further updates.

What Is The Installation Error?

Fairly obviously, the Elden Ring install issue occurs when players are attempting to install the game. The install process doesn't complete, leaving players unable to experience the game in its entirety. At this point, with the game being so new, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly why it's happening.

It's also possible that the situation won't be completely fixed until the developers release a patch. In this situation, it's well worth keeping an eye out for any pending updates on the game.

Major issues like these are usually rapidly resolved by developers, as they have a huge impact on players. But in the meantime, the fixes we've suggested above will hopefully work in the interim.
