The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gave fans those classic feeling Trek adventures they weren’t getting from Discovery. Strange New Worlds Season 2 will continue that old-school feeling whilst giving fans a long-anticipated storyline: the first-ever meeting between Captain Kirk and Spock.
Fans did meet a Captain Kirk in the first season of Strange New Worlds, played by Paul Wesley. However, the Kirk we met was from an alternate reality. As it turns out, we’ll meet the real one from the Prime Timeline in Season 2.
Captain Kirk meets Spock
Showrunner Henry Alonso Myers talked up Captain Kirk’s first meeting with Spock in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2. During an interview with TVLine (via Yahoo! News), Myers said that it was a tall order to set up Kirk and Spock’s iconic friendship.
We think about it every day,” Myers said. “In the moment, when they finally meet, we absolutely make a big moment of it and hope people will enjoy what we come up with.”
Though this is our Captain Kirk, Myers did tease that this was a younger and more flawed version of the character. After all, this is a younger and more inexperienced Captain Kirk from the one in the ‘60s. Myers said: “He has some stuff to figure out before he becomes that person.”
Original plans for Kirk and Spock in Strange New Worlds Season 2
Seeing Captain Kirk and Spock meet for the first time is exciting but there were wilder plans for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2. Myers explains that the original plan for Strange New Worlds Season 2 was to jump seven years to the future; the same date as the very first Star Trek episode.
“Obviously, we were jumping forward seven years, to the same era as [the original Star Trek episode] ‘Balance of Terror,’’’ he explained. “We felt like he would be on the Enterprise at that point, but we didn’t want to commit to that character yet because that character is something we’re looking forward to in the future at some point on Strange New Worlds.”
It looks like there are plans to include the original Captain Kirk in Strange New Worlds, though not just yet. Trekkies are definitely interested in seeing a fully-developed Captain Kirk with the characters from Strange New Worlds but they’ll have to wait a bit longer.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can currently be viewed on the Paramount Plus streaming service.
