Warzone vs Fortnite revenue: Which game makes more money?

A Battle-Royale game in the ‘Call of Duty’ series looked to be an obvious route for Activision in the last few years, and that route became official in March with ‘Warzone’ being released for multiple platforms.

In four months it’s already amassed 50 million players, with its monthly content of weapons and other aspects changing how teams use their tactics on the battlefield.

But when you look at the other side of the battle-royale coin with Fortnite and its 250 million players, it’s still regarded as the most-popular game out of the two, mainly due to it being around much longer, and its concerts and other events that have made it a viral phenomenon on social media.

But across all of this; the revenue generated between the two isn’t discussed much. So with that, here’s just what each game has brought in to both Activision and Epic Games.

A Golden Gun

Ever since its launch in March this year, ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ has offered microtransactions to easily offer you game’s currency, ‘COD Points’ to unlock the many tiers that the game offers.

A battle pass has helped with this, allowing you to collect cosmetics such as gestures, pendants, weapons and much more to make you look like General Zod instead of Mr Muscle.

The series also has the benefit of PlayStation 5 and Series X appearing soon thanks to the game’s cross play support, so with the rumoured next entry being named ‘Cold War’, you can bet that there’s going to be even more available on the store.

When you total all this up, the revenue comes to around $2 billion, a huge amount considering that the game only launched four months ago; but thats what the power of a brand can do, and this effort by Activision was carried out perfectly.

Running to the Fortnite Bank

When it comes to Fortnite, the revenue has been in excess of $1 billion in each year since its launch, and $1.8 billion up to June of last year.

Fortnite is known for its many microtransactions, with so many items, weapons and gestures that are too many to count; you only need to watch a live-stream of a match on Twitch to almost understand the depths of what you can buy.

But the tie-in with artists and films in the last year has made it much more visible in industries that it previously wasn’t, making the game go viral several times. That’s also thanks to the streamers and LetsPlayers that have made a living out of the game.

When it comes down to it, Fortnite is the clear winner in how much money it makes, mainly due to the Seasons and Chapters that it’s been well known for. The changes in the map and the modes that it offers, results in Fortnite generating much more revenue than ‘Warzone’.

Time will tell to see how both perform once lockdown is almost a distant memory, but with next-gen consoles launching at the end of the year, it looks like the revenue of both games is only going to increase ten-fold.
