Since generative AI software was introduced in music, it has evolved rapidly from a novel expert tool to an increasingly accessible one that even casual hobbyists can use.
AI music generators can now produce compositions within a range of different musical styles and genres in almost no time and with minimal tech knowledge. Great news for amateurs who want to dip their toes and play with some new tunes.
Suno: Building A Future Where Anyone Can Make Great Music
Suno is a free AI music generator that can create songs in a variety of styles and genres using text prompts. The user experience is pretty straightforward: enter a song description such as "romantic, heartfelt rap for Valentine's Day" and click Create. Within a few seconds, Suno will come up with a song to your requirements.
The platform also offers AI-written lyrics and royalty-free vocals that are ready to use on any of the app's compositions.
As mentioned, Suno is free to use and offers users 50 daily credits, or enough to generate about ten songs. However, if you need to generate more tracks or want to use your creations commercially, a subscription plan is required.
AIVA: Your Personal AI Music Generation Assistant
AIVA (short for Artificial Intelligence Virtual Intelligence) boasts increased user control and allows the creation of tracks according to a chosen style or even chord progression. A step up from basic AI music generators, the software can even compose within niche genres, such as different types of Jazz, Synthwave or Afro House.
After they're generated, the compositions can be edited by tweaking chord progressions, melodies and the types of instruments used.
Though AIVA offers an almost intimidatingly broad range of customization, even beginners can use it with just minimal musical knowledge.
The free version offers only three downloads per month, and if you use the songs, you will have to credit AIVA. But getting a paid subscription lifts these limits and grants the rights to even monetize your tracks.
Soundraw: Create Unique Songs In Just A Few Clicks
Farther down the customization rabbithole, we have Soundraw. Along with the usual genres and instruments, it also allows for modifying a track's length, tempo, and mood. Users can also select a heme and generate tracks accordingly (kind of like those atmospheric YouTube playlists created around the mood of being a student at Hogwarts or the protagonist of a doomed love story).
Soundraw can mass-produce several sample tracks, which you can play, edit, and share. You can also duplicate different sections of the songs simply by clicking the plus icon under a selected segment, and then copy, paste or make changes at will.
Unlimited tracks can be generated on the free plan, but a paid membership is required if you want to actually download them.
Boomy: Create Original Songs In Seconds
Boomy's main stand-out feature is that it can work with vocals. When users first log in, they are asked to choose an instrumental style, then a mood and then, finally, click on Create Song. The resulting creation, ready within seconds, can even be shared on Spotify and Apple Music.
If you don't like a song, you can click on Try Again, and Boomy will take another shot at generating your track.
The software also offers an Auto Vocal option, which turns spoken audio into a complete song. This will come already broken down into sections to allow for easy editing.
While Boomy is free, there's a three-download cap for each month and users who want access to more will have to choose a paid plan.
Beatoven.ai: Royalty-Free AI Music Generator
Beatoven is probably the simplest of the free AI music generators on this list. All you need to do is sign up and enter a short prompt, and it will do the rest. For example, a prompt such as "a one-minute track for an intense Call of Duty Game," will generate four tracks in slightly different music styles.
Though this simplicity is great for beginners, if you want track customization options with Beatoven, you'll need to sign up for one of the premium plans. Also, as with most other AI music software, only paying users can actually download their creations.
