Thanos will return to the MCU, says Joseph Starlin

The Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had an amazing villain with Thanos. After years of hype, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame saw the villain amazingly brought to screen.

Of course, Thanos is killed at the end of Avengers: Endgame, taken out by Tony Stark. However, it looks like the big purple villain is on his way back to the MCU, but it won’t be any time soon.

Is Thanos coming back to the MCU?

In an interview with Inverse, Thanos creator Joseph Starlin explained that the character will undoubtedly return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the character’s death, the comic book creator believes wholeheartedly that he’ll return to film.

In his first point, Starlin explained that Thanos is a huge moneymaker for Disney. With this in mind, it seems that the character could have to return at some point.

“Well, I think he probably hits a nerve,” the creator said. “He raises questions that a number of us have thought about. He's also just a badass character. I don't think anybody thinks we've seen the last of him. Disney made a shitload of money off of him and there's probably a shitload of money still to be made. So my fingers are crossed.“

Furthermore, the creator explained that the supervillain could always return due to the multiverse. With the multiverse now open for the MCU, Thanos can easily return if they wanted. Starlin explained:

“I've heard Marvel may want to use some other characters I've done. I think they're running out. Now that they've got this multiverse, there's the possibility of bringing back Thanos. And with Thanos, that opens up possibilities for other characters. There are a few that they haven't used, like the Blood Brothers.”

Taking away from Kang

One issue with bringing back Thanos is that it would take away from whatever the current MCU villain is. For example, with Kang the Conqueror as the current galactic-scale villain, bringing back Thanos would eliminate his threat.

On the other hand, there is one way of bringing back the purple villain and having it work. Similar to the Hulk in the start of Infinity War, showing the new villain easily take out Thanos would easily show the power of the franchise’s new threat.

In our opinion, bringing back Thanos doesn’t quite make sense. Sure, with the multiverse, he could come back, but it does take away from the stellar ending of Avengers: Endgame.
