Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi isn’t afraid to change up the formula of something stale. The beloved director's upcoming Star Wars movie is also expected to switch things up. However, Waititi believes his film may end up getting canceled for how different it could be.
Will LucasFilm fire Taika Waititi from Star Wars?
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Waititi admitted that he could join Garth Edwards, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller as fired Star Wars directors. Edwards was fired from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story while Lord and Miller were removed from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Despite all that, Waititi isn’t going to rush the project and is hopeful that he comes up with an idea that everyone loves.
"[It] might happen to me! And I think Taika [of] 10 years ago would be so panicked and nervous at the prospect of that. But if it’s not right, it’s not right," he admits. "If it’s not ready, it’s not ready. [With] Star Wars, I don’t want to rush. It’s something I wouldn’t want to just leap into and not feel that it’s unique, it’s my film, and it makes sense. Because that would be a disaster. I’m writing at the moment. So I’m gonna do my best to come up with an idea that everyone loves."
Only time will tell how different Waititi’s Star Wars will be when compared to the sequel trilogy but it’s clear that the director is taking this seriously. Thankfully, he’s already proven that he can work on Star Wars after directing the season finale of The Mandalorian. Hopefully, we get more details on the new Star Wars movie soon.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars won’t have forced tie-ins to the franchise
Star Wars has been too reliant on nostalgia in recent years, with The Mandalorian Season 2, The Rise of Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi packed to the brim with fanservice. Waititi hopes to change that up a bit, as he doesn’t want to mess with our treasured memories, nor does he have the time to do proper research on appropriate fanservice.
"You know, I don’t want to mess with something that’s so treasured. Also, you feel like you’ve got to do a lot of research...and I don’t have any time. [Laughs] I mean, there’s thousands of books that have been written, these volumes of books about Star Wars with all those characters," Waititi continues. "I just don’t have time to get through them. So I can’t say like, you know, confidently, I’d be able to do something that’s like very close to what everyone knows."
When Rolling Stone pointed out that he could make a new sci-fi movie instead of Star Wars, the director did admit that there will be familiar elements that keep it in line with the franchise. He then jokingly said: "Yeah, if you take away all of the Star Wars stuff, it’s not Star Wars. So I retract my thing that I said a couple of weeks ago!"
Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie will be coming to theaters sometime next year. Fans of his work can check out Thor: Love and Thunder in theaters or Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max.
