Disney has huge plans for the future of the Star Wars franchise. Alongside the smattering of TV shows like The Mandalorian, Star Wars will also receive new movies. Amidst the list of film directors working on Star Wars movies is beloved MCU director Taika Waititi.
Known for Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do In The Shadows and JoJo Rabbit, Taika Waititi is becoming a fan-favourite filmmaker. As such, fans have been desperately wondering what the director will do with the Star Wars franchise.
Taika Waititi discuses his Star Wars movie
At the time of writing, Taika Waititi is currently working on Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel Studios. After the release of the filmmaker's next Marvel movie, many are hoping the director will move right onto Star Wars.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Waititi explained that he doesn't know what his next project is. However, the filmmaker does hope that their next project will be his mysterious Star Wars movie. He said:
“I don’t know if that’s going to be Star Wars. I hope it’ll be that but there’s a whole lot of other little things that I’ve got my sticky little fingers attached to so we’ll see.”

Bringing Star Wars back to cinemas
After the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker, it was believed that the franchise would take a theatrical break. After all, the disappointment surrounding the final movie of the sequel trilogy sullied the franchise. However, the ongoing success of Disney Plus content quickly breathed new life into the series.
The first new Star Wars movie will be Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Directed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, the film is expected to be set either after the original trilogy or after the sequel trilogy. Details on the project are unfortunately sparse.
The movie will release in cinemas December 22nd, 2023.
