Classic cartoon Star Wars: Droids returns in full on Disney Plus

Star Wars: The Clone Wars and its successor Rebels introduced a new generation of fans to animated Star Wars. However, decades before, the franchise was granted a far worse animated fate with Star Wars: Droids.

In their effort to archive all Star Wars content on the Disney Plus streaming service, Disney has added Star Wars: Droids to the platform. Disney has gracefully added all thirteen episodes of the show for fans to consume.

What is Star Wars: Droids?

Released in 1985, Star Wars: Droids was the first ever animated show in the Star Wars universe. Each episode would air as part of ABC's Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour. As such, the show would share its air time with that of the animated Ewoks series.

At the time it aired, Droids was one of the most expensive animated shows of all time with an episode costing around $600,000. The show was animated by Korean studio Hanho Heung-Up, the same studio as Space Ace and Dragon’s Lair. However, the show’s animation is far from the same level of quality as those projects.

Even with nostalgia behind it, the show isn't a beloved spin-off for the franchise. On IMDB, the show sits with a mediocre 6.1 out of 10 rating. While some see it as a fun sci-fi romp, others are far less kind to the 36-year-old show.

Is the show canon?

Star Wars: Droids did used to be canon back before the Disney acquisition. However, the show is now part of Star Wars' Legends library. The Legends library refers to the old expanded universe that was culled before the release of The Force Awakens.

Even when Droids was a part of canon, later Star Wars movies caused some discrepancies with the continuity. The show is set before the events of A New Hope with the titular Droids constantly acquiring new masters. However, in A New Hope, C-3PO says that Raymus Antilles was their last master, who they are given to in Episode 3.

Nevertheless, Droids is now available on Disney Plus for anyone to watch. It's not terrible, but it's not great.
