John Williams will go down in history as one of the best composers of all time. From Star Wars to Superman and countless others, Williams has given a voice to countless movies in his 90-year life.
Williams announced plans to retire after working on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, the composer quickly came back from retirement for both Indiana Jones 5 as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, it appears that Williams is aiming for retirement again.
It’s Harrison Ford’s fault
Speaking with AP News, Williams revealed that his decision to retire again was partially inspired by Han Solo and Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford. Ford, who is still creating action films at the age of 78, announced plans to retire after Indiana Jones 5.
Much like Williams, Ford has discussed retirement for a long time now. After a brief break, the actor came back for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to get the ending he wanted for Han Solo, Blade Runner 2049, and The Rise of Skywalker to close out the trilogy.
“At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film,” Williams says. “So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
Considering how Williams is turning 90 and still produces some of the best movie symphonies, we can’t wait to hear what he makes for the last Indiana Jones movie. Well, the last one to have Harrison Ford before they decide to reboot it with Chris Pratt or something.

Sort of retired
To be fair to John Williams, the legendary composer did admit that his retirement doesn’t mean that there won’t be anything for him to do. Williams seemingly wants to do more than movie OSTs but doesn’t outright say if this is the end for him. The man just wants more freedom to relax, as he points out how each Star Wars film was a six-month commitment, at the very least.
However, now that Williams is turning 90, it’s made him want to reflect on his accomplishments. From what we’ve seen, it’s clear that the man has had a great life and wants to relish it a bit. Considering everything he’s done, we can’t blame him for wanting to take it a bit easy.
“It’s given me the ability to breathe, the ability to live and understand that there’s more to corporal life,” Williams says. “Without being religious, which I’m not especially, there is a spiritual life, an artistic life, a realm that’s above the mundanities of everyday realities. Music can raise one’s thinking to the level of poetry. We can reflect on how necessary music has been for humanity. I always like to speculate that music is older than language, that we were probably beating drums and blowing on reeds before we could speak. So it’s an essential part of our humanity. It’s given me my life.”
Should Williams truly retire after this? He will have earned it. All we want is pure happiness for the man who gave us iconic themes for Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and so much more.
