Star Trek 4 director abandons film to direct Marvel’s Fantastic Four

Paramount’s return to the Kelvin Timeline with Star Trek 4 has suffered another blow. After a lengthy delay in favour of Transformers, the next sci-fi adventure now suffers from the loss of director Matt Shakman.

Star Trek 4 loses director to Marvel

Originally set to direct the continuation of the Kelvin Timeline, director Matt Shakman has ditched Star Trek 4. The still untitled Trek-fest is now without a director as Shakman moves towards Marvel.

Known for his work on WandaVision, Shakman will be replacing Spider-Man director John Watts on the Fantastic Four movie. This means that he will be unable to film the next Trek due to scheduling conflicts.

In a statement, Paramount explained that the director has already helped to prepare the movie. While not much is known about the next Enterprise adventure, the director has helped to pen out where the story will be going.

“Matt Shakman is an incredibly talented filmmaker, and we regret the timing didn’t align for him to direct our upcoming Star Trek film,” the studio said. “We are grateful for his many contributions, are excited about the creative vision of this next chapter and look forward to bringing it to audiences all around world.”

It’s still releasing next year

At least progress on the next Trek movie is going ahead. After years of absence from cinemas, it’s a marvel that the series is coming back at all. Furthermore, it’s even more surprising that the franchise returns next year.

Current, the fourth Kelvin Trek movie will release on Dec. 22, 2023. Also, there is seemingly a new Kelvin timeline TV show in the works to release alongside or after the new movie.

Fans are still torn on the Kelvin timeline movie. However, after the fantastic third movie, this fourth adventure could finally be the great Trek movie fans have asked for. After all, even numbered Trek movies do tend to be the better ones… except Into Darkness. Yes, we shuddered as well.
