Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might be a bigger open-world game than the first but it won’t necessarily be a longer one. Fans worried about the superhero title’s length will be happy to know that it’s about as long as the first Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Ryan Smith, senior game director at Insomniac, spoke with VG247 about the upcoming sequel and how it uses PS5 technology to its advantage. When questions came about the game’s length, Smith said that it was in “the same ball-park” as the first title when it comes to overall hours.
“We don’t want this to be an 80-100 hour game, that’s not where we want to be. We want to tell amazing stories, the best we can,” Smith said. “We want to make every mission really, really memorable. That’s our goal, rather than going super, super broad.”
The first Spider-Man game gave players a good amount of side content to play through when they finished the 17-hour campaign. Players could get a number of collectibles and unlock costumes as a reward. Certain side quests also had compelling storylines behind them, some of which led to boss fights.
Although fans wouldn’t mind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being a bit longer, knowing that it won’t take 100 hours is a breath of fresh air. It’s good to see AAA games scaling back on play time, especially since recent Sony exclusives like God of War Ragnarok have been pretty long.
That’s not to say 100-hour games are a thing of the past. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will take up around 100 hours, as it gives players more freedom with multiple towns to visit. Xbox-exclusive Starfield can take forever, though the main campaign can actually be beaten in about 15 or so hours.
It’s good to know that Insomniac Games can improve Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without making the title feel bloated. Decent length aside, the superhero sequel also adds health bars to boss fights, which is more video-game-y but lets us know how much progress we’re making. Players will also be able to customise over 65 costumes in the game, with some sick alternate colors adding more variety to each suit.
