Meta Quest players are experiencing significant frustration as a recent software update has bricked many VR headsets.
According to reports on forums like Reddit and Meta's community boards, the issue affects Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S. After updating, users are greeted with the message, "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted."
Meta has acknowledged this issue, confirming it is a software update error, and advised impacted users to reboot their headset by holding the power button for 45 seconds.
However, this technique hasn't been helpful for everyone. While factory resets are a common troubleshooting step, they are usually a last resort and can generally worsen the situation, leaving the devices unresponsive.
This issue is more common with older headsets that haven't been used in a long time. Reports suggest that some devices have updated without problems while others encounter critical failures, possibly due to an incorrectly deployed update image. Meta has deleted some online discussions, intensifying user frustration.
Compounding the issue is Meta's replacement policy for devices out of warranty. Users report being offered refurbished units for $150 as a replacement option. While newer headsets are still under warranty, the situation leaves many long-time users in a bind.
As Meta works to address this update issue, users are advised not to turn on new headsets or initiate updates until a solution is established. Contacting Meta support is the only option for people whose devices were affected.
