Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is introducing a number of new villains but one of them was actually set up in the first game’s DLC. While most fans can’t wait to see Kraven the Hunter and Venom, they already met this villain already if they played The City That Never Sleeps.
During the cinematic trailer that showed who Kraven is hunting in the sequel, a character called Wraith can be seen on the screen. Spoilers for the first game’s DLC but Wraith is actually Yuri Watanabe, Spidey’s cop friend from the first game who turns heel during the three-part tale.
For those curious about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 who haven’t played the DLC, we’ll fill you in. Hammerhead killed a number of policemen under Watanabe’s watch and she wanted revenge on the villain. When Spider-Man beats him at the end of the second DLC, Watanabe almost kills him after he’s restrained, resulting in her suspension before she quit the force.
In the third part of the DLC, a side quest has Spider-Man finding a number of clues Yuri left for him. This eventually leads to the corpse of a gangster Yuri killed out of revenge, resulting in Spidey and Yuri being at odds. Now she’s the Wraith and it will be interesting to see how the sequel follows up on these events.
Based on what we’ve seen, it looks like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is going to be a really busy sequel. Kraven and Venom aside, the gameplay showcase also revealed that The Lizard is one of the villains who these Spider-Men will fight in the game. Add all the chaos with the symbiote and leftover plot points from the first game, it seems that the writers have a lot of stories to juggle.
Despite a CGI story trailer and an impressive gameplay showcase, no release date for the game has been revealed. Venom actor Tony Todd accidentally leaked it, claiming it will be out this September, and Insomniac Games did say an official announcement was coming soon.
