Marvel’s Midnight Suns was supposed to launch with a staggering 25 characters but constraints in development shortened that roster to 14. While the game is getting more characters via DLC, it would have been interesting to see the base title launch with 25 playable superheroes.

Game Designer Jake Solomon spoke with PCGamesN about the game’s roster and his love for Marvel Comics in general. Apparently, if he had his way, there would have been 50 to 60 playable characters. However, even with the roster shortened to 25, they felt it wasn’t possible due to the gameplay.

“I could make the case for probably 50 or 60 heroes,” Solomon claims. “I’d be super excited to tell their stories and excited to make them bounce off of each other. My executive producer showed me our initial roster for the game. And it was like 25 heroes. And it was ridiculous. He was like, ‘we’re never going to be able to make this many heroes and all this stuff.’”

Despite a more limited roster, Solomon was able to keep his favourite character in Marvel’s Midnight Suns: Magik. This probably won’t be a huge surprise to many since she plays a major role in the game, despite not appearing in a lot of mainstream media outside of the New Mutants movie.

As for characters that were considered for the game, Solomon mentions Gambit and The Punisher. While Frank Castle was a part of the Midnight Sons comics, even being bundled with the group in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, it was decided that Blade fit his role better. Gambit was heavily considered due to Solomon’s love for the X-Men and his use of cards but it wasn’t meant to be.

Smaller roster aside, it seems that Marvel’s Midnight Suns has proven to be quite the hit with gamers and critics alike. The combat has been praised, as have the social sim elements, even if you can’t make out with Wolverine. More DLC for the game is planned, with Deadpool recently making his way to the title.
