He hasn’t been around long but fans are loving Insomniac Games’ version of Spider-Man, with some saying he’s the best version of Peter Parker. That is about to be tested as Insomniac’s Spidey will meet the main 616 Spidey in a brand-new digital-first comic series.
Spider-Man Unlimited is a new series in the Infinity Comics lineup and will have the aforementioned team-up between video game and comic Spider-Man. What makes this fitting is that Christos Gage, one of the first game’s writers, will be scripting the comic’s story.
While this isn’t the first time Insomniac’s webhead appeared in comics, this is his first time meeting the “real” Peter Parker. Gage teased some of the fun possibilities that will come from this crossover, especially since video game Pete is happy with Mary Jane and comic book Pete, well, isn’t. (Paul, amiright.)
“Obviously, they have a lot in common, but what are the little differences? They’re both science buffs, but is one more into one field than the other? One’s lost their Aunt May (spoiler) but is still in a relationship with Mary Jane Watson, while the other is in kind of the opposite situation,” Gage explains to Marvel. “How do these dynamics come into play? And do these two heroes really have to fight before they team up? (Spoiler: Yes. I’m old school like that.)”
For even more cross-brand promotion, the villain these two Peter Parkers will be facing is The Spot. Most fans recently saw The Spot in action during Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, so his presence here is no coincidence. Insomniac’s Spidey actually made a brief cameo in the movie and there was even new footage of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in the film.
Both Spider-Men will be going through their fair share of drama in the coming months. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will have Insomniac Peter struggling with the symbiote and trying to save Harry Osborn’s life. Comic book Peter was recently infused with the sins of Norman Osborn (don’t ask), struggling with the extremes of good and evil.
