Rockstar confirmed today that it would introduce a player-created GTA V update that reduces loading times by up to 70%.
Earlier in the month, Github user tostercx discovered a way to reduce loading times in GTA.
Tostercx released the update unofficially, with the caveat that it was only for testing purposes and wasn’t officially supported by Rockstar.
Today, Rockstar confirmed it would incorporate the fix into GTA V, and that it was working on getting it out as soon as possible.
The Fix
The fix addressed GTA V’s long loading times and focused on correcting a single-thread CPU bottleneck that occurred when starting GTA Online.
Commenting on the fix, tostercx said that it, ”shouldn’t take more than a day for a single dev to solve."
If you’d like to find out more about how the fix works, you can find a very detailed analysis here.
Fan involvement in video games is nothing new, and there are countless examples of a game’s community fixing bugs, issues, and even creating new fan made content. Interestingly, it’s rare for a fan-made fix to be officially released, and Rockstar’s reaction is an unexpected one.
Rockstar’s Response
Responding to PC Gamer, Rockstar confirmed it was aware of the fix, and that it intends to implement it within GTA V.
"After a thorough investigation, we can confirm that player t0st did, in fact, reveal an aspect of the game code related to load times for the PC version of GTA Online that could be improved."
Rockstar added, "As a result of these investigations, we have made some changes that will be implemented in a forthcoming title update."
There’s no information around when players can expect to see this fix, but loading times have been an issue in the game since launch, so we have no doubt it will be welcomed by the community.
