Fortnite has established itself as one of the most played online games, mainly due to its addictively fun battle-royale nature and its many crossovers across many IPs.
It is also free-to-play, so all you need is a supported device where you can launch and play the game that can be downloaded online at no cost. It's currently in its sixth season, where Lara Croft is the headline character for the 'Primal' theme.
It's also welcome that, regardless of the court case between Apple and Epic games, the game is still available to play on their Macs, but the version remains on 13.40, so you may encounter issues if you've collected items that appeared after this patch.
With this in mind, here's how to play Fortnite on Mac devices regardless.
Downloading Fortnite on Mac
Download the client from the official Epic Games website. Choose the Mac version and the DMG file will download to your 'Download' folder.
This is similar to Origin and Steam, but as Fortnite belongs to Epic, this client is the only way to play the game on any device; not just the Mac. Once it's installed, sign in or create an Epic Games account.
If you've already registered Fortnite to your account, it will show as 'Available to Install' in your library, otherwise you can find it on the 'Store' tab.
Once it's installed, you're good to go to reach that #1 spot.
Recommended Mac specs for Fortnite
Epic Games lists the minimum requirements to run Fortnite on your Mac. Having these minimum specs can run the game in its standard settings at a steady framerate.
- Intel Iris Pro 5200 or equivalent AMD GPU on Mac
- Core i3-3225 3.3 GHzCPU
- 4GB RAM
- macOS version 10.14.6
To fully maximize the game's graphical capabilities, Epic also provided the recommended specs in which the game can run at an even higher framerate and everything else.
- AMD Radeon HD 7870 or equivalent GPU
- Core i5-7300U 3.5 GHz CPU
- 8GB RAM
- macOS versions 10.14.6 or newer
It remains to be seen if Apple and Epic can work out the differences, and it will be interesting to see, if it does get resolved, in how the game can run on the M1 Macs.
