Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow has debunked rumors of Darth Maul appearing in the upcoming Disney+ series. Initially, there were reports claiming Darth Maul was penciled in the show before getting removed. However, Chow has now gone one step further, stating that the former Sith was never part of the plan.
Why won’t Darth Maul appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Speaking with Total Film (via Gamesradar), Obi-Wan director Deborah Chow claimed that Darth Maul was never a part of their plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi. While numerous reports stated that Maul was the original villain — with fight scenes already prepped — Chow has outright refused the claims.
The director explained that Maul was never the villain of the series. Instead, the show was always designed to feature Darth Vader and the Inquisitors. This is due to Star Wars creative Dave Feloni already telling that story in Star Wars Rebels, where the two had their final battle.
"As long as I’ve been involved, we’ve never had Darth Maul in any of it. Dave [Filoni] did a beautiful job of telling that story already."

Darth Vader’s appearance in the show was also cited as a reason why Maul wouldn’t be making a comeback. Chow states that Vader’s presence in the show already casts a long shadow and adding in Maul would have been too much.
Ultimately, while it would be fun to see Ewan McGregor and Ray Park recreate the fight in Rebels for Obi-Wan Kenobi, this was the right call. Fans have already witnessed their full rivalry in animated form, so they would just be retreading covered ground.

Will we ever see him again?
Ever since his cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, fans have wondered when we would see the classic villain appear in more Star Wars media. Some were hopeful that he would appear in The Mandalorian, especially after we saw the Darksaber, but that didn’t happen either.
Considering how many arcs the character has gone through in The Clone Wars and Rebels, it might be best to put Darth Maul to rest. Outside of the Solo cameo, there isn’t much left that can be done with the character, especially since we’ve seen him die twice now.
Admittedly, anyone involved in the production of Obi-Wan Kenobi could just be lying in order to surprise fans. Disney always does its best to keep spoilers from spreading, especially for Star Wars. The company stayed tight-lipped for Ahsoka on The Mandalorian so we wouldn’t be too surprised if they do the same for Darth Maul on the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is slated to premiere on Disney+ next month, on May 27.
