At CES 2025, Lenovo unveiled its new handheld gaming lineup, including the Legion Go S, a successor to the original Legion Go.
Notably, this generation comes with SteamOS, Valve's Linux-based gaming operating system, while allowing users to choose Windows 11, catering to different gaming preferences.

Legion Go S: A Sleek, Simplified Design
The Legion Go S abandons its predecessor's detachable controller design and adopts a traditional handheld form factor. It has an 8-inch display with built-in controls, and it eliminates the kickstand and detachable parts, resulting in a lighter, more ergonomic design.
This device is available in white for the Windows model and black for the SteamOS edition. It weighs only 730g and is one of its class's most portable gaming PCs.
The 1920x1200 resolution and 120Hz display deliver smooth visuals, ideal for fast-paced gaming.
Users can choose between AMD's new Ryzen Z2 Go processor for budget-friendly performance or the Ryzen Z1 Extreme for power-intensive gaming. Both these configurations promise to accommodate gamers according to their requirements and budget.
SteamOS: Optimized for Handheld Gaming
Lenovo has officially adopted SteamOS for the first time, signaling a shift towards more optimized handheld gaming. SteamOS features a gamer-friendly interface, improved sleep/wake capabilities, and native Steam integration.
While Windows remains an option for individuals to rely on Xbox Game Pass or particular Windows-only games, the SteamOS version stands out due to its lower entry price.
Performance and Configurations
The Legion Go S comes in several configurations, starting with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage and increasing to 32GB in higher-end models. It also has a 55Wh battery for extended gaming sessions and a microSD card for expandable storage.
Pricing for the SteamOS version starts at $499, with Windows configurations reaching up to $729 for models with higher specs.

Lenovo’s Broader Handheld Vision
Lenovo also teased the Legion Go 2, a successor in development that will include advanced features such as a Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor and an OLED display.
While still a prototype, it demonstrates Lenovo's dedication to improving the handheld gaming market.
Why It Matters
The Legion Go S is a strong contender to Valve's Steam Deck. It offers customizable configurations, powerful technology, and the flexibility of SteamOS or Windows.
Lenovo's next portable, which has a much lower starting price than many competitors, is expected to make waves in 2025.
Whether you are a budget-conscious gamer or a performance enthusiast, the Legion Go S offers an enticing gateway to portable PC gaming.
