Much like opening a bag of crisps the wrong way, Call of Duty:Vanguard packet burst and packet loss can really spoil your day. While Vanguard officially launches on November 5th, players have been enjoying early access to the game via the Beta period. But what those players have been enjoying less so, is packet loss or packet burst spoiling their game.
Given that this is an open beta, it's to be expected that there are going to be problems. And we know from bitter experience that packet loss is an issue in other COD games as well. We'll look today at what, if anything, you can do to alleviate Call of Duty: Vanguard packet burst and packet loss. Let's get started.
How To Fix Packet Loss and Packet Burst In COD: Vanguard
Unfortunately, COD: Vanguard packet burst and packet loss are not issues that can be easily fixed. Sometimes, they will simply remedy themselves, depending upon the underlying cause of the issue. But just in case, there are a couple of things you can try, and see whether they make a difference to you:
- Make sure your internet connection is as stable as possible. If you're on WiFi, if possible switch to a wired ethernet connection. Try to minimise the amount of traffic on your network, so close apps or shutdown devices that don't need to be online.
- Because network congestion can be a cause of these issues, trying a VPN can sometimes be an effective remedy. This will mean you use a different server, potentially where there is less traffic.
- In other Call of Duty games, Activision recommends setting your NAT type to Open/type 1. This ensures the best connection possible. If you have NAT setting of Moderate/Type 2, or Strict/Type 3, then port forwarding can help. To do this:
- Type in your routers IP address into your browser
- Log in to your router
- Find your router’s Port Forwarding section
- Put the IP address of your PC or console in the correct box in your router
- Enter the correct TCP and UDP ports for your game in the corresponding boxes. These are as follows:
- PC: TCP: 3074,27014-27050
- UDP: 3074,3478,4379-4380,27000-27031,27036
- PlayStation 4: TCP: 1935,3478-3480
- UDP: 3074,3478-3479
- Xbox One: TCP: 3074
- UDP: 88,500,3074-3075,3544,4500
- PlayStation 5: TCP: 1935,3478-3480
- UDP: 3074,3478-3479
- Xbox Series X|S: TCP: 3074
- UDP: 88,500,3074-3075,3544,4500
We can't say for certain whether these solutions will work for you or not. The volume of people suffering from this problem suggests it is far more likely to be an Activision server issue, rather than something you can resolve at home.

What are Packet Loss and Packet Burst?
Packet loss and packet burst are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but do represent slightly different things. Packet loss is when a packet of data never arrives at its destination. And packet burst is when all the data arrives, but not necessarily in the right order.
Classic signs of packet burst are things like rubber banding, where movement seems jerky and haphazard. It's often accompanied by a lag spike, a freeze, or a stutter. Packet loss also leads to high ping (in essence the time it takes to exchange data between your network and the game server) and stuttering. Is some cases, it can cause you to be thrown out of the game.
There are lots of possible causes, which makes them hard to pin down. But most commonly, issues arise because of:
- Network congestion (pretty common during a highly anticipated beta period)
- Software bugs
- Hardware issues
The two are very similar, and whichever one is effecting you, the outcome is broadly the same: an imperfect, hugely frustrating gaming experience. Hopefully by the time Vanguard officially launches in November, many of these issues will be fixed. We'll just have to wait and see.
