Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series is about to flood gaming once again as the French publisher aims to bring its franchise back into the limelight.
Ubisoft plans to revitalise the series with a host of new entries, including Mirage, Infinity, Codename Red, Codename Hex, Codename Jade, Invictus and more.
The company was criticised in the early 2010s for Assassin’s Creed fatigue. When the franchise was at its height, there was a new entry every single year, and Ubisoft seems to be returning to that practice.
In its 2022-2023 earnings report, Ubisoft revealed that its heavily increasing its workforce for the popular game series. While the company has already investigated using AI to generate some aspects of upcoming games, it’s still bringing in a large number of human workers.
The report reveals that the company has increased its workforce by 40% across in-development Assassin’s Creed projects. Described as an “ambitious expansion”, Ubisoft is taking workers off non-AC projects to fuel its new series plans.
Ubisoft’s next game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, is planned to release at the end of this year. Afterwards, fans can expect a new entry every year or two as the company puts all of its resources into the franchise.
“As part of our increased strategic focus on our biggest growth opportunities and progressive reallocation of resources, Ubisoft will notably increase the number of talents working on the Assassin’s Creed franchise by 40% over the coming years to fuel its ambitious expansion,” the earnings report reads.
Ubisoft’s report doesn’t have any mention of worry surrounding the inevitable Assassin’s Creed fatigue. Near the end of the last console generation, the publisher made a conscious effort to reduce releases and create new gameplay experiences. Now, the company is rolling back on everything.
With multiple single-player entries, a VR game, a multiplayer title and more already in the works, there’s about to be a flood of new games in the series. At first, this might be great fun, but how much AC is too much AC?
Ubisoft is still working on new games outside of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, including new Far Cry and Watch Dogs entries.
